Bottom Line

The Servatur Aparthotel Terrazamar Sunsuite is a collection of 306 hillside apartment suites in Puerto Rico on Gran Canaria Island. The units offer a lot of space and the convenience of kitchenettes, but have fairly basic furnishings. Overall, the property has a no-frills feel to it, with scant decor throughout. A standout amenity is the outdoor pool, which is well-maintained and a decent size (there is also a kiddy pool adjacent). The property also features an on-site convenience store for groceries, as well as two bars and a restaurant.

Servatur Terrazamar & Sun Suite

Scene

A clean and fairly basic property that draws budget travelers

The Sunsuite offers some simple comforts, but it definitely has a no-frills look to it. The lobby is furnished with wicker seats and coffee tables, and sturdy plastic tables are scattered around outside. The pool area is decked with yellow lounge chairs and includes a sizable poolside bar that serves drinks and snacks. The hotel is geared towards vacationers on a budget. While the decor and offerings are simple, everything is clean and well maintained.

Location

In a quieter part of Gran Canaria that is a bit of a trek to the beach

The Sunsuite is set on a quiet hillside in the town of Puerto Rico. While the inclusion of kitchenettes in all suites makes eating-in a viable option, there are also a number of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. A pharmacy and a few other shops can be reached by foot as well, though the immediate area remains fairly quiet. The beach is a bit of a trek—about a 20-minute walk or five-minute drive. The hotel is about a 35-minute drive from the airport.

Rooms

Spacious, but sparsely furnished

The units are all quite spacious, but not overly furnished. Each two-room suite includes a large living room with a sofa bed and a small table and chairs; a moderately sized bedroom with two twin beds; a small kitchenette; and a clean but spartan bathroom. While the furnishings are basic, the vibrant, beachy colors and artwork give the suites some character. The kitchenettes comes equipped with coffeemakers, kettles, toasters, two-burner stoves, microwaves, and dishes and silverware for at least four people. The massive balconies that overlooks the rocky hills of Puerto Rico are the best room feature by far. Each balcony has a table, four chairs, two chaise lounges, and still plenty of room to move.

Activities and amenities add to the value of this budget hotel, but extra charges can add up.

While the Sunsuite’s offerings are not extensive, it does have more amenities than expected from a budget hotel. In addition to the pool, the property houses some other outdoor amenities scattered throughout the grounds. Beyond the pool, there are billiards tables and a few pieces of play equipment for kids. There are also tennis and squash courts on the premises, and equipment can be rented at the reception desk.

The lobby houses a tiny bar and a small cafe with pastries, sandwiches, pizza, and burgers. A somewhat heartier meal can be found at the hotel’s 11th-floor restaurant, which offers options such as grilled fish and meats.

During the summer months, there is periodic afternoon and nighttime entertainment; in fact, the hotel has a small patio theater.

While the hotel's amenities and activities add to its overall value, some guests have complained about extra charges for everything from Wi-Fi to air-conditioning.
