Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half-pearl Hotelli Finn is a basic property with no on-site facilities, but it offers chic and affordable accommodations, plus a great location. Its 36 stylish guest rooms have flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, but there's no AC and some showers lack curtains. Free tea and coffee is on offer in the lobby, and guests receive a discount for breakfast at the neighboring cafe. Also, bike rental is available at the front desk during summer. Travelers looking for an amenity-rich stay who are willing to spend more can consider Hotel Helka, but it isn't as centrally located.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hotelli Finn

Scene

Leisure travelers grab free coffee and tea in the lobby, but don't linger

Hotelli Finn occupies the top two floors of its building, accessed by a tiny cage elevator or the vintage staircase that winds around it. A small lobby on the sixth floor has trendy decor, with brown striped wallpaper and bright red lacquered doors. Clocks showing the time in cities around the world hang opposite the front desk, and there's a chalk board scrawled with the local weather for the day. Beyond the space there's a small table with free coffee and tea and a lounge with lockers for luggage, but it doesn't lend itself to lingering. Down the hall, a bookcase is tucked into a corner with a chair, but its more for design purposes than a place to sit and read. The hotel draws couples, groups of friends, and solo travelers.

Location

Great central location near dining, shopping, and major attractions

The hotel is situated just off the main road that runs through the heart of the city, on the top two floors of a building with street-level cafes, clubs, and bars, and several more are within walking distance. The harbor and Market Square, where purveyors sell local fare, are both about a 10-minute walk away. Helsinki Central Railway Station is a seven-minute walk from the hotel, providing easy access to destinations farther afield. The airport is roughly a 25-minute drive, or about 42 minutes via public transportation.

Rooms

Basic with funky decor and flat-screen TVs, but no AC and awkward showers

Half of the hotel's guest rooms face the street (either Kalevankatu or Yrjönkatu) and half face the interior courtyard. Each room is different, but share funky decor that includes striking damask wallpaper, trendy, weathered wood floors, industrial metal chairs, and work from local artists. There's also IKEA-style desks, and clothing and shoe racks. Free Wi-Fi and 32-inch flat-screen TVs are standard. Standard rooms are called "Small" or "Medium" depending on whether they have one or two twin beds. Upgraded Large and Extra Large rooms add living areas with sofa beds, and eye-catching bright red mini-fridges. The bathrooms are on the small side, and have open showers (the drain is in the floor next to the toilets) with skimpy curtains -- or no curtains at all -- to help contain spray from handheld showerheads.
