Articles Mentioning Upper-middle-range

InterContinental Miami

This huge 641-room downtown tower has been regularly renovated — the lobby was redone in 2008, and guestrooms were refreshed in 2012. With its attentive (though somewhat overwhelmed) service, decent pool and reasonable gym and spa, it consistently attracts a busy crowd of business travelers and families.

Disney’s Old Key West Resort

While other Disney resorts feel either too small and crowded or too grand and difficult to navigate, Old Key West’s size feels just right — 761 studios and large, kitchen-equipped condos, a great gym, and numerous pools (including a waterslide) all set in a beautiful, riverside setting, near Epcot and Downtown Disney.

Tensing Pen Resort

With an intimate collection of 22 cottages (28 rooms), Tensing Pen is where travelers come to unplug — no TVs, phones, or radios in the units — and enjoy the breathtaking cliffs of Negril’s West End. Although lacking a beachfront, guests can jump from various points into the ocean, rent snorkeling gear, or take a dip in the ocean-view pool. A spa hut and yoga pavilion are available for wellness activities, and a low-key restaurant and bar are open all day. Rustic rooms are lovely and come with outdoor spaces, but the striking Pillar units with outdoor showers lack air-conditioning. Rates are extremely reasonable, particularly given all rates include continental breakfast. It’s worth comparing rates with the similar Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel, though it’s adult-only.

The Ambrose Hotel

This 77-room, mid-range boutique hotel is one of the most environmentally focused hotels in Southern California. While it mostly caters to business travelers, eco-minded visitors (who don’t mind staying a bit inland) find it to be a fantastic, Zen-like alternative to Santa Monica’s enormous beachfront hotels, like the Loews, Le Merigot, or the Miramar.

Kauai Coast Resort at the Beachboy

This 108-unit time-share resort in Kapaa offers full kitchens (in most condos), free Wi-Fi, a popular seafood restaurant, proximity to good beaches and dining, and one of the cheapest resort pool bars around. You can’t swim off its shore, but all told, it’s one of the best deals in Kauai.

Holiday Inn Resort Aruba – Beach Resort & Casino

The three-and-a-half-pearl Holiday Inn Resort is a big family-friendly beachfront property with a traditional resort vibe, and plenty to eat and do on-site. Its 597 guest rooms are pleasant enough, but some are dated and show wear while others are more modern, with stylish coastal decor. All have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and furnished balconies. There’s a slew of organized activities to entertain the American and European guests who stay here, though the lottery system to snag a palapa on the hotel’s busy beach can be a nuisance. The all-inclusive option and prime Palm Beach location make the hotel a decent value, especially for those with young kids. The abundance of restaurants, nightlife, and shops across the road make it easy to venture out. Travelers seeking a less crowded beach setting could try Divi Village Golf & Beach Resort.

Iberostar Rose Hall Beach

The least expensive of Montego Bay’s Iberostar trio, this upbeat, and at times rowdy, all-inclusive mega-resort features tons of amenities — four restaurants, four bars, water sports, a spa, a theater, a casino, a nightclub, and a kids’ club — all for seriously affordable rates. The rooms may be small, the decor may be outdated, and the grounds may be packed to the brim at times, but it’s one of the best values on the island.

Sunset at the Palms

Across the street from the beach, the upper-middle-range, adult-only Sunset at the Palms offers a laid-back, all-inclusive experience without the crowds or bustling entertainment found at nearby properties. The 85 tree house-style units have Asian-inspired furnishings, air-conditioning units, satellite TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and furnished patios. Grounds are lush and tropical, but lack ocean views. The beach side of the property houses an oceanfront bar and grill, and free loungers, while the garden side has a good-sized pool with a swim-up bar, open-air buffet and a la carte restaurants, a small spa, well-equipped gym, and tennis court. Food receives positive reviews, particularly the multi-course Chef’s Showcase. Rooms near the road may experience noise, and the lack of ample activities may be a downside for some. Couples wanting an ocean-view room and more activity may prefer nearby Couples Negril.

The Darcy Washington DC

Located four blocks from Dupont Circle and almost as close to D.C.’s business district, The Darcy Washington DC is especially popular among business travelers for its clean, updated rooms, well-equipped fitness center, surprisingly innovative restaurant, free Wi-Fi in the lobby, and solid business center. It’s a solid choice for the price.

Intracoastal Yacht Club

The Intracoastal Yacht Club offers a quiet, bayside experience with fully equipped, family-friendly apartments that include kitchens, washers and dryers, modern electronics (but no Wi-Fi), and great balconies. But beyond in-room cooking, meals are a bit of a hassle, as is the 15-minute walk to the beach. Also, these are condominiums, so don’t expect traditional hotel service.
