Hotel Playasol Cala Tarida

A quite typical example of the budget category in beach towns throughout Spain, the Hotel Club Cala Tarida is a simple, mostly reliable pick for those looking for a laid-back Ibiza-style vacation. It's a lively, slightly downmarket hotel that appeals to a more mixed crowd. From a style perspective, the hotel is dated, lending to its budget ambience. Stepping into the lobby, old-fashioned wood fixtures combine with modern furnishings to create mismatched interiors -- an unintentional design motif that continues throughout most of the property's public spaces. The complex comprises four buildings -- the main L-shaped building plus three low-rise blocks housing the rooms, which overlook either a round or rectangular pool. Grounds consist of sometimes patchy lawns dotted with various palm trees, sub-tropical plants, and wicker seating. Much of the property's magnolia-colored walls are showing signs of age and weathering, and could use a refresh. The hotel attracts all types and ages of guests, including families with kids, couples, and vacationing groups of friends.

The hotel's location is one of its biggest draws; it's set close to the edge of the cliff in the small and peaceful resort town of Cala Tarida, on Ibiza's western coast. Just outside the property, a stepped trail offers direct access to the picturesque sandy beach below, though its quite steep and might be a challenge for some on the return journey. There are a few restaurants and bars within walking distance, as well as a couple supermarkets and car rental agencies. A bus stops right outside and connects to Ibiza town or San Antonio (known for its nightlife). Alternatively, both are around 20 to 25 minutes away by car, as is Ibiza Airport. Those looking to experience the more natural side of the island -- which can seem in short supply to most vacationers -- can head to Sa Talaiassa, where there are trails and hikes. It's a 25-minute drive from the hotel.

The complex has 195 rooms, all of which are decorated with cheerful patterned fabrics, colorful artwork, and simple wood furnishings. Though generally clean and well maintained, interiors feel undeniably dated. Tube TVs add to this look and rooms lack minibars and tea- or coffee-making facilities. Bathrooms are clean and functional, with shower/tub combos, wall-mounted hairdryers, and basic toiletries. All rooms open to furnished terraces or balconies, many of which overlook the pools. Some feature superb sea -- and even sunset -- views. Some of the rooms near the pools will pick up noise from the evening entertainment and regular pool parties.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the hotel's buffet restaurant, which features a cheerful maritime theme with ship-like buffet counters. An all-inclusive plan covering all meals and most drinks and snacks is available, as are breakfast-only and half-board rates. There are two swimming pools on-site, one that includes poolside activities and Bali beds, and a second quieter one surrounded by gardens; both have lots of lounge chairs. The hotel also organizes weekly pool parties with barbecues and fortnightly Ibizan dance parties (so rooms overlooking the pool section of the complex can be prone to noise). Nightly entertainment can also be noisy, but enthusiastic. Children are kept entertained with a kids' club, a separate splash pool, and a playground. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, but the connection can be spotty.
