Beyond Resort Khaolak

Situated along the Andaman Sea, water figures largely in creating this hotel's peaceful oasis vibe -- one that draws plenty of travelers seeking to unwind in a tranquil seaside spot. In the center of the resort is a lagoon with fountains and palm trees surrounding it, while the expansive open-air lobby sits up on a hill above the villas and pool area. It offers several seating areas where guests can hang out and enjoy the beautiful setting. Decorative touches include traditional Thai artwork and fresh flowers. It's a modern resort, though the decor can feel a little canned from time to time, with much of the artwork similar to what can be found in any of the tourist markets around the country. Children younger than 18 are not allowed, which enhances the get-away vibe for many visitors. This place won't suit travelers in search of nightlife or shopping action, but it's a worthy option for those looking for a relaxing beach vacation. The hotel attracts mostly couples, and many guests are long-stays. It also draws tour groups, especially from Australia. 

The hotel is located on the beach in Khuk Khak Takuapa, a 10-minute drive north of Khao Lak. There's not much in the immediate area around the resort, although a few local restaurants are within walking distance and there's a mini-mart. The Sai Ruang Waterfall can be reached in about 10 minutes by car, and the hotel offers tours there, as well as other local attractions and beaches. Khao Lak Lamru National Park is a 20-minute drive south of the resort for even more waterfalls, as well as beaches and lots of jungle to explore. Phuket International Airport is about an hour-and-a-half drive from the hotel. Airport transfers are available for a fee. 

All accommodations are villas, and they are all spacious -- even the entry-level Palm Villas. One- and two-bedroom units also are available. Decor is modern and simple, with hardwood floors, pitched ceilings, and neutral color schemes with red accents. Furniture, artwork, and lighting all have clean, simple lines. Expect to see the same semi-forced Thai decor in many rooms, with gold applique silhouettes of pagodas and the like on the walls. This is complemented by details like shimmery gold panels, though ultimately the look is restrained. Other rooms have a more contemporary style, with on-trend charcoal walls and handsome sculptural pieces hanging on the walls. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, free minibars, tea/coffee makers, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and safes. Bathrooms are massive and feature modern above-counter sinks, rainfall showerheads in spacious showers, hairdryers, and toiletries in large eco-friendly bottles. Terraces are furnished, and some units have outdoor tubs as well as infinity pools overlooking the beach. 

Guests can choose between three on-site restaurants and a bar for dining. The fine-dining Siam Thai Restaurant serves Thai and western fare in an elegant, tropical space with hardwood floors and white tablecloths. The Beach Bar and Restaurant is a casual space in the sand with a thatched roof bar and lounge seating. Guests can also eat and drink right by the waves under the palm trees. Breakfast is served buffet-style in the Beyond Cafe, and the Good Friends Restaurant serves seafood and Thai-style barbecue on the beach. Private dinners on the beach also are available. 

Overlooking the beach, the huge outdoor pool is divided into sections with a swim-up bar in the center. Cushioned lounge chairs with umbrellas line the deck and the adjacent beach, and palm trees provide a bit of shade. Guests can even place their lounge chairs in a shallow section of the pool to stay cool. Massage treatments are also offered next to the pool. Lounge chairs are also arranged on a raised sandy area above the wide beach.

The elegant Kanda Spa offers a variety of treatments combining Eastern and Western techniques. It also has a sauna and a huge manicure and pedicure room. The open, bright fitness center offers cardio and weight-training equipment, plus personal trainers. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide views of the garden and natural light. A library and business center is stocked with DVDs for guests to borrow, and computers are set up with internet access. Cooking classes teach guests how to prepare Thai meals. The Siam Thai restaurant can be set up for private business and social events, and the resort offers a variety of wedding packages. Additional romantic options include couples' massages and private beach dinners.
