Located inside the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the Sanctuary is situated on dunes that look out over an ocean beach. It's far off the main road and past a security gate that surrounds the property. Trees and greenery encircle the area, creating a lush and tropical environment. There's not much commerce in the immediate vicinity and those who want to explore the area will need a car. It's a 45-minute drive to downtown Charleston and a one-hour drive from Charleston airport; the resort can arrange for a transfer with advance notice.

A combination of cream-colored bedspreads, dark wood furniture, and balconies with French doors create a historic and comfortable charm in the large rooms here. Some suites have four-poster beds.The bathrooms have big ergonomic tubs -- some with whirlpool jets -- separate stall showers, and marble vanities. Many of the tiled balconies have doric-column railings and look out onto the Atlantic.

The property offers a wide range of outdoor activities for guests who want to take advantage of its breathtaking setting on the edge of the barrier island. Golfing is naturally the biggest draw, but other popular activities include biking, open-air painting, group swimming, and kayaking. There's also a large number of family-oriented activities, including disc golf, tie-dyeing and other arts and crafts, and pool parties and surfing for teenagers. There are two pools (one of which is an infinity pool), a tennis court, and a large fitness center with a variety of machines and free weights. Wi-Fi is free, as is parking. There are 11 restaurants to choose from, although they are on the pricey side. While there are other dining options on the island, a car is necessary to reach most of them.
