Bottom Line

The 115-room, mid-range Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa is a family- and eco-friendly hotel along quiet Pantai Tengah beach. While a bit removed from the action, it's a quick 10-minute walk to Cenang's restaurants and shops. Rooms are contemporary if a bit underwhelming, equipped with flat-screen TVs, kettles, mini-fridges, and bathrobes. A solid list of on-site facilities includes multiple swimming pools, spa offering indoor and outdoor treatments, and a restaurant serving free hot and cold breakfast spreads. There is a gym, but it's tiny, and Wi-Fi is limited to public areas. Daily free eco-walks around the property are available to learn of the hotel's sustainable practices. It's worth comparing rates with Berjaya Langkawi Resort - Malaysia, which offers more activities and dining options.

Scene

Beachfront, family-friendly hotel with relaxed atmosphere and eco-friendly practices

Families and couples in equal measure come to this laid-back hotel located on the beautiful Pantai Tengah beach -- a much more relaxed area than nearby Cenang Beach. Eco-conscious travelers are also attracted to this hotel, as the hotel boasts more than 300 green practices to keep it sustainable; daily free eco-walks are provided to point some of these out to guests. The overall design is contemporary and understated, with some locally inspired decor. The lobby and restaurant are simple, pleasant affairs, using lots of dark wood, and colorful red lanterns. Outside, bougainvillea flowers and casual wood seating areas facing the ocean create a peaceful atmosphere.

Location

Peaceful Pantai Tengah beach setting within easy walking distance to shops, bars and restaurants

Travelers looking to be a bit removed from the action (and inevitable noise) or Cenang Beach, will find The Frangipani's location a major plus. It sits along Pantai Tengah, a peaceful white-sand beach. There are several duty-free shops, bars, and restaurants within a few minutes' walk, and the hub of Cenang is about a 10- to 15-minute walk away. Kuah, the capital of Langkawi, is a 23-minute drive from the hotel, while UnderWater World is a 12-minute walk. The hotel is a 17-minute drive from Langkawi International Airport, and the hotel can provide airport transfers for a fee. On-site parking is free.

Rooms

Contemporary, pleasant rooms with modern amenities and outdoor areas

The 115 rooms at the Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa are all contemporary -- if a bit underwhelming -- affairs with beige tiling, dark-wood furniture including carved headboards, and beige or pale-olive-green walls. Linens are neutral-toned and colorful modern art feels a bit out of place. Room categories start with spacious 484-square-foot (45-square-meter) Deluxe Rooms with either king or twin beds. Garden Villas come with outdoor showers and bathtubs, while the Royal Suite has a jetted tub. All have balconies or patios with chairs, some of which look to the sea.

Also standard are flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, bathrobes and slippers, mini-fridges, free bottled water, and coffee- and tea-making facilities. There is no free Wi-Fi in rooms, and safes are only available in higher-priced rooms. Rollaway beds are available for a fee. Some of the rooms don’t have a lot of sunlight and the furniture shows a little wear. Modern bathrooms come with walk-in showers or showers and separate tubs, plus hairdryers and free toiletries.

Features

Spa with outdoor treatments, swimming pools, and free breakfast

This eco-friendly hotel has many features to attract nature lovers and the eco-conscious. There is a free educational “eco-walk” for guests that showcases some of the 300 green practices that go into making the hotel sustainable. The spa offers a variety of treatments including scrubs and wraps, using the hotel’s all-natural handmade products. There are a free spa, and three treatment rooms in total, with one for couples and one outdoors. A gym is on-site, but it's small and has just a few pieces of equipment.

In addition to direct beach access, there are two outdoor swimming pools, one freshwater and one saltwater, a children’s pool, and two whirlpools. A poolside bar offers snacks and beverages all day. For dining, the Mentari Grill offers fresh local dishes, as well as a hot and cold buffet breakfast for free.

Bicycles, water sports, and childcare services are all available for an added cost. WI-Fi is free in the common areas.
