Labranda El Dorado ranks highly among the endless self-catering complexes lining Lanzarote's beachfront stretch, and the mostly British, Irish, and Scandinavian crowd here form a loyal following. Welcoming couples and families since 1985, the property is one of the region's oldest, and though dated throughout, cleanliness and maintenance standards are high. Impeccably maintained lawns, palms, and neat stone paths divide up apartments and bungalows, which have yellow and white facades that pop amid surrounding greenery. A warm earth-tone palette dominates interiors, but guests are mostly found outdoors. There's plenty of space around outdoor pools, and kids get their own one. The hotel's laid-back atmosphere suits guests, although the property's lack of elevators, and many steps and slopes are less easygoing. Balinese daybeds in gardens add romantic touches, but the place is more appropriate for families.

With back exits leading to Puerto del Carmen's Old Town, and front ones opening onto the New Town, the property couldn't be better placed. The Old Town's narrow streets and quaint harbor are a 10-minute walk, and it's half that for Avenida de las Playas, where endless bars and restaurants opposite Playa Grande form the New Town's main drag. Quieter, and ideal for diving, Playa Chica is four minutes closer. Biosfera Plaza shopping complex is a five-minute walk, and a supermarket here accompanies boutiques, restaurants, and a movie theater. A bus stop set a one-minute walk from the hotel runs to the towns of Arrecife and Costa Teguise. Dormant volcanoes at Timanfaya National Park are a 20-minute drive, and it's half that for sea lion shows and pony rides at Rancho Texas Park. Taxis are plentiful, and Lanzarote Airport is a nine-minute drive.

One- and Two- Bedroom Apartments are outfitted in old-fashioned and simple furnishings in a mostly neutral palette. Yellow or orange artwork, floral-patterned bedding, and/or drapes add decorative flair. Superior rooms refreshed in 2010 are slightly more contemporary, and these have microwaves, which standard-level apartments lack. All kitchens have electric hobs, kettles, fridge/freezers, ovens, toasters, juicers, coffeemakers, and kitchenware. Additional amenities include flat-screen TVs, phones, desks, and balconies with plastic tables and chairs. However, expect fees for heating, AC, high chairs, and safes. White-tiled bathrooms have all the essentials, and marble counters in upgraded rooms provide an attractive touch. Larger apartments have two bathrooms, and note, towel replacements occur every three days, while linens are changed twice-weekly. Crib fittings are free. Note, apartments towards the back of the property can suffer from noise due to nearby bars, and some past guests have mentioned ants being a problem. All have free Wi-Fi, but it's unreliable. 

Surrounded by tall palms and impeccable terraces, two pools and a kiddy pool are the designated hangout spot, and they're overlooked by lifeguards. They're heated and good-sized, plus surrounded by loungers, umbrellas, and romantic draped daybeds. Equally popular are the pool bar's burgers, ice cream, and drink selection. While happy hour gets a thumbs-up, El Dorado Restaurant receives mixed reviews. At a fee, its breakfast buffet offers cooked "Full English" and continental options, varied pastries, and healthier fruits, plus tea, coffee, and juice. Spanish "paella" rice dishes accompany lunch and dinner steaks, salads, and pastas, and guests can dine indoors or al fresco. Expansive lawns offer ample space for kids to run around, and houses a playground with swing set and climbing frame. On the downside, there are no fitness or wellness facilities, or animation or evening entertainment (pro for some). Coin-operated laundry machines are available on-site. Parking is free, and keycard entry at the complex's gates enhances security. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
