Here’s where to stay for cheap in Paris’ historic Le Marais — arguably the city’s coolest neighborhood.
The 18-room Hotel Caron is a three-pearl boutique property in Paris' trendy Marais, one of the city's best central neighborhoods. It's surrounded by restaurants, shops, galleries, and nightlife, and a number of major Paris attractions are within walking distance. Contemporary rooms are small, but stylish and clean, and feature air-conditioning, free minibar items, and loaner DVDs. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and breakfast is served for a fee, but other amenities are pretty thin. The Hostellerie du Marais, which also has a small lounge, is nearby and worth considering, though rooms at Hotel Caron are a bit more fresh.
On the edge of the Marais District just off Place de la Republique, this hotel aims to provide a boutique experience for less expensive rates. Its 33 small contemporary-style rooms fulfill guests’ basic needs with a splash of decorative oomph. The Haussmannian property also scores bonus points for having a free fitness room -- a rarity for petite Paris hotels -- along with a sauna, steam room, and massage room, each of which charge an hourly fee.
Set up more like a bed-and-breakfast than a hotel, the budget Hotel du Haut Marais has just nine guest rooms, including one apartment with a kitchenette. Nestled into the Marais district of central Paris -- with plenty of shops, restaurants, and museums within easy walking distance -- this hotel is a great value, with breakfast included in the room price. Small guest rooms are cozy and clean, with exposed beams and flea market finds, along with flat-screen TVs. The property is best suited for couples or families who don’t mind stairs, and who appreciate family-run, home-like lodging.
