Bottom Line

This 12-room, upper-middle-range Barrio Alto boutique is a family-owned spot ideal for travelers who are looking for a little bite of Lisbon's bohemian side. This colorful guest house features a blend of modern and industrial decor, free Wi-Fi, in-room TVs on request, and a communal breakfast table. Rooms are bright and comfortable, each with sleek bathrooms. While this is not a full-service hotel (no gym or restaurant), visitors can expect a free, homemade breakfast buffet, bar service in the living room lounge, nibbles of banana bread and sips of coffee or tea, and concierge service. Travelers looking for a full restaurant and bar on-site should check out the nearby Independente Hostel and Suites, though a bit less charming.

A Casa das Janelas com Vista

Scene

Stylish and colorful family-owned spot with a decidedly homey vibe

Set against the narrow, cobblestone streets of one of Lisbon's historic and artsy neighborhoods, A Casa das Janelas com Vista -- A House of Windows with a View -- charms guests right from first sight of its pale-olive tiled facade and slim dark-green doors. The immediate surrounding residential area leaves much to be desired and can feel slightly sparse, however, as soon as visitors walk through the front doors, it feels like home. Guests are greeted with a sunny and colorful space, outfitted in a stylish mix of industrial and mid-century modern decor, where the devil is in the details.

The reception area bleeds into the living room lounge space, filled with cozy couches, wooden tables, metal lamps, and shelves of colorful scarves. This area also houses a large, open kitchen featuring a communal breakfast table, wide farm sink, and stainless steel appliances. This cheerful and cozy vibe continues out to the side courtyard, a high-walled sliver of space in the sun just wide enough to fit a few wrought-iron bistro tables. Overall, the homey atmosphere, attractive colorful decor, and city views from some rooms make this an excellent boutique stay for travelers who don't mind sacrificing a few typical hotel features.

Rooms

Bright and stylish, individually decorated rooms with TVs on advance request

All 12 rooms at the A Casa das Janelas com Vista are outfitted in contemporary decor with nods to a bygone era, be it a colorfully refurbished antique table or tufted leather bench. Like most lodging in Lisbon, rooms tend to be a bit cramped, especially around the bed, though Standard Rooms receive the most complaints. Smooth, cream-painted walls are mostly left bare aside from the usually singular one-color framed art print. Wardrobes are left unfinished in a natural pale-pink wood, while darker color schemes are in the sleek and modern bathrooms. Bathrooms come with rainfall showerheads in standing glass showers, toiletries, hairdryers, and bidets. Wi-Fi is free and there are also air-conditioning, free bottled water, and safes, but no mini-fridges. Note that TVs must be requested in advance. Some rooms have small balconies with city or river views.
