Bottom Line

The 30-room London Town Hotel is a decent two-pearl property in Earl's Court. The underground station is just one minute away on foot and the area has numerous restaurants, shops, and bars. Rooms are basic, bland, dated, and have no air-conditioning, but prices are low and rooms are fine for a simple place to crash at night. Wi-Fi and breakfast are included and there's a guest lounge with free hot drinks. A garden and a terrace are highlights of the property. More modern rooms at a similar price point are available at the BEST WESTERN The Boltons just down the road.

Oyster Hotel Review

London Town Hotel

Scene

A small and basic hotel for those on a budget

This two-pearl hotel is set in a converted Victorian townhouse, built in 1873. Walking up a few steps beneath a blue awning and through the double glass doors leads into the entrance hall with peach walls, blue carpets, and a stand of tourist information leaflets. The cane conservatory furniture has seen better days, and the overall decor is rather dated and shabby in places, but the property is generally clean and tidy. The terrace and garden with seating are nice features, and a luxury in London, and there is a simple, bright breakfast room as well. Many guests staying here are visiting an exhibition at the nearby Olympia Exhibition Centre, and the proximity to the underground station is a draw for many tourists as well.

Location

Lots of shops and dining options nearby, one minute from the underground station

Situated on tree-lined Penywern Road, this hotel is in the heart of Earl’s Court within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Earl's Court Underground station on the Piccadilly Line is a minute away on foot, providing access to London’s West End in less than a half hour. There are lots of other hotels along the surrounding streets, as well as plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafes. Olympia Exhibition Centre is a 10-minute taxi ride. Some of London’s top museums are within a 20-minute walk, including the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, though the same trips can take less than 10 minutes by car. Kensington High Street's shops are a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Heathrow Airport is 35 minutes away by car or tube, though drive times vary wildly due to traffic.

Rooms

Basic but functional rooms with private bathrooms

Rooms at the London Town are available in Single, Double/Twin, Triple, or Family (which sleeps four) configurations. All have a simple green and white decor with oak veneer furniture, but the look isn't contemporary or fresh. Dated bed runners and pillows match the emerald drapes and carpeting, and vinyl padded headboards stand above the beds. Some rooms have small balconies with chairs, but the tilework needs attention. Rooms have private tiled bathrooms with stand-up showers plus stand-alone sinks with no counter space. Toiletries are provided, as are towels. Rooms do not have electric kettles, but hot beverages are available in the guest lounge. All rooms do have a small flat-screen TV, hairdryer, safe, and phone, but there’s no air-conditioning in the hotel. Fans can be requested from reception, but many guests staying during warmer weather have found the rooms to be uncomfortably hot. While these budget spaces lack style, they are generally clean (though we did spot a few hairs when we visited), and the solid location is enticing for budget travelers.

Features

Free Wi-Fi and breakfast, plus a guest lounge and garden

This hotel has a small elevator that can fit two people. Luggage can be stored at the hotel, although there is a charge for doing so. There’s also a charge to use the internet on the hotel’s computer station in the lounge, although Wi-Fi is free throughout the property (though previous guests have found the signal to be weak). Breakfast is included in the room rate here, and is a basic, continental breakfast of ham, cheese, boiled eggs, pastries, toast, and cereals. The hotel has a spacious guest lounge on the first floor, which offers free hot drinks and leads onto a terrace with park benches that overlooks the garden. The garden is a small paved area with some tables and chairs and a few potted plants. It is slightly untidy in places, although any outside space in central London is a bonus.
