Bottom Line

A two-minute walk from Old Street Station, the two-and-a-half pearl Premier Inn London City Old Street is well located for business stays. Repeat guests will be familiar with the chain-wide royal purple decor throughout the hotel and it's 251 renovated guest rooms. Quad Family Rooms are a tight squeeze for four people, Double Rooms include space for a purple chaise lounge. Some rooms have views of Olympic Park. Thyme bar and restaurant serves reasonably priced English and contemporary dishes, and provides a happy hour. Free Wi-Fi is temperamental, and there's no on-site parking. Check rates at the Holiday Inn Express London City for faster access to Hoxton Square's nightlife and more appealing rooms.

Oyster Hotel Review

London City (Old Street) Hotel

Scene

Cookie cutter purple decor at a chain hotel

From the exterior the Premier Inn London City - Old Street is a simply constructed brick block, not dissimilar to the surrounding office buildings and apartment high rises in the area. As guests enter the small lobby they’re greeted by a tiny purple reception counter and self-check-in kiosks for those in a hurry. The space is generic and similar to any Premier Inn lobby, with purple accents, white tile floors, and a rack of brochures next to a map of London. A cluster of three contemporary silver chairs is centered around a circular coffee table, next to a pay-per-use computer. Thyme bar and restaurant looks much more modern and fresh with wooden floors, floral wallpaper, and a large window that looks out onto the street below. Most guests are business travelers, though families and couples are here for the low rates and central location too.

Location

In a bustling neighborhood near the Old Street underground station

Guests looking for an abundance of eateries and bars on their door step will not be spoiled for choice at the Premier Inn London Old Street. Located on a quiet street with neighboring offices and apartment blocks, the hotel provides fast access to good transport links; with Kings Cross St Pancras two stops away on the Northern Line from Old Street Station, a two-minute walk from the hotel. Spitalfields, well known for its markets and vintage shops is a 10-minute drive away. Trendy cocktail bars and restaurants are overflowing in Shoreditch, a four-minute walk from the hotel. Sun Star Express, a handy 24-hour shop two minutes' walk from the hotel, is convenient for last minute purchases. Limited free street parking is available on nights and weekends, but the hotel doesn't have a secure lot.

Rooms

Clean rooms and some high-end views of the London city skyline

The renovated rooms at the Premier Inn London Old Street have maintained the brand's somewhat dated royal purple color theme and wooden furnishings. Size wise, the Standard Double or Accessible Rooms have the most space and come with a purple armchair or chaise lounge. Rooms for three or four people have twin beds shoved into the corner and are a tight squeeze. Each room comes with spotty, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and air-conditioning. Ironing boards, adapters, and additional linens can be requested for the room via the 24-hour reception desk. Beds are made up with white linens and purple bed runners. Blackout curtains do a good job of keeping light and sound at bay. Bathrooms come standard with wall-mounted body wash, shower/tub combos, and large mirrors. Some rooms have wonderful views of the London city skyline and Olympic Park.
