  • Beach here isn't swimmable (common in Cabo)

Bottom Line

When it comes to all-inclusive luxury resorts, Grand Velas Los Cabos is one of Cabo's best choices. From the beautiful grounds to the upbeat-but-classy vibe, this is pampering done right. Large rooms come in soft contemporary tones and feature ocean and pool views from large balconies (many with plunge pools). Dining is easily one of the highlights, with an array of chic restaurants like Frida and Casa del Autor. You'll also find an extensive array of top-shelf drinks and wines as part of all-inclusive rates. The numerous tiered pools all face the beach, which is pretty (but too dangerous for swimming -- a common issue in Cabo). While Le Blanc Los Cabos offers the closest competition in the luxury all-inclusive category, Grand Velas is a true gem that's worth the splurge.

Grand Velas Los Cabos

Scene

Refined all-inclusive resort with cool contemporary design and a mix of upbeat and calm vibes

Grand Velas Los Cabos has little competition in the area. That's not to say there aren't other all-inclusive resorts packing this stretch of coast, but when it comes to offering a truly luxurious package, Grand Velas takes the cake. Upon arriving, the resort makes a statement, with cool architectural details and sculptural furniture all creating a contemporary vibe that retains just enough modern Mexican flare. In fact, the look feels lifted straight out of Polanco or Condesa, two of Mexico City's poshest neighborhoods. Design isn't this hotel's only strong suit, though, and the entire resort curves around a series of great features. Beautiful tiered pools sit under palm trees, while landscaping and flowers hide an array of romantic and family-friendly features. It's lively, but not wild, and draws a mix of couples and groups of friends looking to experience a more refined take on the all-inclusive experience. While we didn't spot many children during our 2018 visit, the hotel also draws its share of families.

Location

Midway between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, right on the beach

Like most the resorts that line the shores between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, you'll need a car if you want to explore the region. Otherwise, you'll be relying on taxis to get around. The property sits midway between the two main towns of this region -- it's about a 20-minute drive to the center of either. San Jose is your go-to destination for an artsy, colonial vibe and it's famous for its indie boutiques and Thursday night art walks. Cabo San Lucas is the party town, where loud clubs and bars go late into the night. Given the lack of swimmable beaches in the area -- including the stretch of sand on which the resort sits -- head to Playa el Chileno if you'd like to take a dip in the water. It's less than a 10-minute drive away. You can reach Todos Santos, one of Mexico's most popular Magic Towns (Pueblos Magicos), in a little over an hour by car as well. The airport is a 30- to 35-minute drive away.

Rooms

Spacious and chic, with oceanview balconies and spa-worthy bathrooms, many with their own plunge pools

Suites here are spacious and done up in a bright contemporary style that makes them feel even roomier. While entry-level Ambassador Suites come in one-room layouts, higher categories feature separate living rooms and bedrooms or studio-style layouts with dining areas, living areas, and sleeping areas all laid out in an open floor plan. Expect to see soft greens, grays, and coral hues alongside sharp hardwood details and clean lines.

Features are numerous, including free minibars and snacks, robes, spa-worthy bathrooms with separate rainfall showers and soaking tubs (sometimes soaking tubs for two), Nespresso machines, turndown service, king or queen beds with down comforters, and a selection of high-end welcome liquor like mezcal. Wi-Fi is free, and all rooms have air-conditioning. Balconies come standard and all rooms have views of the grounds, beach, and ocean. Some also feature private plunge pools on the balconies.

Features

Beautiful dining spots and upbeat bars plus amazing tiered pools and a great spa

No one chooses an all-inclusive resort to stay in their room the whole time -- though Grand Velas might make a convincing case for that. Luckily this property matches its style with plenty of substance, and features run deep here. The food and drink options are numerous -- there are several bars and seven restaurants around the property, many found around the pools and beach. More formal dining options include Frida, a gorgeous Mexican restaurant, and Casa del Autor, which is one of the resort's most popular dining spots. Generous buffet options are also available, as well as more casual snack spots, like the lobby cafe.

All-inclusive rates cover every restaurant (buffet and a la carte), snacks, soft drinks, and nearly every type of premium liquor. Some restaurants have extensive wine lists, and not all wines will be included, but the overall package is incredibly generous. In-room dining and all gratuities are also included.

Indulgence isn't limited to food and drink. Tiered pools form the centerpiece of the resort, all beautifully framed by palm trees, white loungers, and plenty of space to catch some sun. The beach is wide stretch of golden sand lined with loungers and cabanas. Beach service (and poolside service) are both available, but you cannot swim in the sea here, a common issue in Cabo.

A beautiful spa sprawls over several treatment areas, including a tranquil relaxation area, beauty salon, and massive hydrotherapy area that's truly something to behold. However, unlike most resorts in the area, you will have to pay to use the hydrotherapy circuit here. Treatments and massage are available, as are healthy snacks and various infused waters. The gym features both standard free weights and machines, plus Kinesis equipment. There is a trainer on hand to explain the latter, and classes are also offered as part of the resort's rates.

Unlike its direct competitor just up the coast, Le Blanc Los Cabos, the Grand Velas allows children, though we didn't spot many during our 2018 visit. There are both children's and teens' clubs that are tricked out with programming and all types of traditional toys and video games. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort and a schedule of light entertainment is offered (though don't expect the wild nights like you'd find at the nearby Royal Decameron).
