Hotel Ada Palace

Sol, Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain

The tiny front desk, lack of an actual lobby, and small elevators might give a poor first impression of this upscale boutique hotel, but don't be deterred. Inside, spacious rooms are elegant (pale yellow striped walls, blue and white toile bedspreads), and have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and hydro-massage showers. Additional highlights here include a wonderful (and expensive) restaurant with gorgeous views of the surrounding buildings, and a stylish rooftop lounge. While there are few amenities, rates tend to be fair and the location on Gran Via is hard to beat.

Hotel Room Mate Alicia

Huertas, Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain

This 37-room boutique is part of a stylish yet affordable chain that offers a youthful, playful design at a good price. All rooms have pops of bright blue, yellow, or red, along with modern furniture, sleek track lighting, and Roy Lichtenstein prints. Bathrooms are also modern, though the showers and tubs lack privacy and are quite revealing (some showers are in the room while some tubs have direct street views). The Duplex is a hip upgrade, with a spacious living room, big outdoor balcony, and mini pool. Conveniently located near Plaza Santa Ana, this hotel offers comfortable rooms with high ceilings and lots of natural light, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and minibars.

Room Mate Oscar

Chueca, Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain

The Room Mate chain uses funky, bright design throughout their hotels, and the 75-room Oscar is no different. Rooms are quirky with curving furniture, tons of space, flat-screen TVs, and modern bathrooms. Bright colors and a focus on unique touches makes for a nice break from generic chains, but adventurous design shouldn't be confused with luxury: Beneath the playful furniture, this hotel is still very much a value property. However, hotel amenities include a year-round rooftop pool and a rooftop bar/lounge with incredible views of Madrid. Suites offer extra features such as big balconies, even larger bathrooms, and soaking tubs. There are also a few nice perks including free Wi-Fi and free apples in the lobby, but the TV only has Spanish-language channels and the property isn't very family-friendly.

ICON Wipton

Salamanca, Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain

The Petit Palace Art Gallery is a 61-room boutique in the upscale Salamanca neighborhood. Located near designer boutiques and fine dining, this property has spacious, contemporary rooms with big windows, flat-screen TVs, and cool glass-walled bathrooms with photo prints. An old wood and wrought-iron elevator brings guests up to the minimalist rooms, accented with small pops of color and large photographs. Hotel perks include free loaner bikes, king beds (a rarity in Madrid), free Wi-Fi, and family-oriented amenities. The breakfast room has exposed brick, vaulted ceilings and some rooms have a Juliet balcony and bay windows.

Petit Palace Plaza del Carmen

Sol, Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain

Petit Palace del Carmen is located on an attractive square in Sol, near many restaurants, shops, and sights. This property is a step above its nearby sister hotel, Petit Palace Londres, with its sleek, modern rooms and pops of color. Black-and-white photographs and dramatic drapes over floor-to-ceiling windows are all nice design touches. Clean, contemporary bathrooms have glass walk-in showers, and some offer saunas and/or Jacuzzi tubs. All rooms have laptops for guest use and free Wi-Fi; additional hotel freebies include bike rentals and coffee in the lobby. With budget-friendly family rooms and an appealing, exposed brick breakfast room, this 42-room hotel is a solid, centrally located pick.
