Hotel Salvia – Adults Only

Soller, Majorca (Mallorca)

Housed in a traditional, restored 19th-century mansion, the adult-only Hotel Salvia offers no shortage of Mediterranean charm. All seven rooms (which are actually all suites) are cozy and rustic-chic, with Mallorcan tiles and other traditional details. Beautiful bathrooms (most with claw-foot tubs), flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, and serene mountain views are found in every room. Hotel Salvia doesn't have a spa (like Posada Terra Santa, below), but it does have a larger pool, lined with loungers and trees, plus a restaurant serving outstanding regional cuisine and Spanish wine pairings. The hotel’s location near the main square in Soller is ideal for those looking to explore the picturesque town on foot, though you'll have to take the streetcar to reach the beach.

2

Boutique Hotel Calatrava

Palma de Mallorca, Majorca (Mallorca)

This intimate beachfront boutique hotel, located in an artfully restored 19th-century building, oozes traditional Mallorcan elegance. Guests, mostly international couples on vacation, are greeted with a glass of Cava in a relaxed and homey lobby set with beautiful exposed beams, contemporary local art, and a few seaside flourishes. Just about everything about the hotel (glass bottle of water and rainfall showers in the rooms, highly attentive service, ocean-facing terraces) is aimed at creating a feeling of relaxation and a chance to enjoy what the Spanish call "la buena vida" -- "the good life" -- good wine, good food, the sea, and the sun. Calatrava's higher level of luxury and seaside location give it a slight edge of Posada Terra Santa, below.

3

Posada Terra Santa

Palma de Mallorca, Majorca (Mallorca)

Though Posada Terra Santa's beautiful mansion home pre-dates Hotel Salvia's by around three centuries (Terra Santa's structure goes back to 1576), this upscale 26-room boutique is filled with decor that is much sleeker and more contemporary than what is found at Salvia. Located in central Palma, Terra Santa is surrounded by tapas bars, shops, and cafes, and is within walking distance of many major attractions, but guests may prefer to stay in and indulge at the hotel's atmospheric spa, rooftop pool, and gorgeous restaurant with Gothic-style arches.

4

Hospes Maricel Mallorca & Spa

Cas Catala, Majorca (Mallorca)

It's all about incredible panoramic views of the ocean and mountains at this regal boutique hotel: the sapphire sea is front and center at Hospes Maricel's Mallorcan restaurant with a terrace, infinity pool, stone-alcove spa, and minimalist-chic rooms. In addition to ocean views, the 51 rooms also feature plasma TVs, luxury linens, and big bathrooms with separate showers and claw-foot tubs. It’s the grandest hotel so far on this list, but it gets docked for somewhat uneven service and occasional maintenance issues (hot water can be limited from time to time).

5

Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa

Port de Soller, Soller, Majorca (Mallorca)

Hotel Salvia above has an explicit no-kids policy, and the following three hotels cater predominantly to adults with their sophisticated vibes, romantic features, and lack of family facilities. Jumeirah, on the other hand, has a kids' club and even offers free stays for children under 12, but despite these kid-friendly features, it draws mostly couples to its secluded, clifftop setting. The hotel has a luxury spa, ocean-view restaurants, and adult-only infinity pool. Many of the 121 stylish rooms have expansive sea views, and a few have picture-perfect vistas of Tramuntana mountains. All rooms have balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, and separate soaking tubs and rain showers in the bathrooms.

6

Son Brull Hotel & Spa

Pollenca, Majorca (Mallorca)

Couples willing to swap the astonishing clifftop setting of Jumeirah for a peaceful location in the country should be happy with Son Brull. This 23-room boutique hotel does an exemplary job of combining restored 18th-century architecture with 21st-century design; the resulting effect is extremely special and genuinely luxurious. Parts of the property feel untouched, such as a charming cobbled courtyard, while a teakwood spa is the picture of contemporary minimalism. The building was once a monastery, and its original (and enormous) olive press makes a particularly impressive backdrop to the bar, and an spacious wood-deck pool terrace offers expansive mountain and countryside panoramas. An immaculate lawn dotted with sculptures and stone heads also provides a tranquil setting for yoga classes. Many guests are well-heeled vacationing couples -- the hotel is particularly popular with honeymooners.

7

Hotel Nixe Palace

Cala Major, Majorca (Mallorca)

Hotel Nixe Palace is straight out of a postcard. Everything about this 118-room, beachfront grande dame exudes elegance and glamour, from its prime, elevated setting overlooking the ocean to its glittering pool and the striking white balustrade that surrounds it. This is a place where refined, privacy-seeking guests fill their days with reading by the pool and taking in brilliant sunsets over the water from airy terraces. The lobby is filled with appropriately palatial trappings (large marble pillars, a piano, rich tapestries), but guests staying in the rather business-like standard rooms might find that the luxury experience falls short (rooms here have nothing on the ones at Son Brull, style-wise).

8

Boutique Hotel Can Cera

Palma de Mallorca, Majorca (Mallorca)

Mallorcan majesty from another era is what one can expect at Can Cera Hotel. Located in a 700-year-old building in the historic center of Palma, the hotel has a beautifully preserved traditional Mallorcan patio, spa with hot tub, library, and tapas bar. Rooms are stately, with private glass galleries with French doors and modern bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. The only main drawback is that the hotel is about a 15-minute walk from the beach and doesn't offer ocean views (or a pool), but it wins big for peace, privacy, luxury, and sense of history.

9

Boutique Hotel Can Alomar

Palma de Mallorca, Majorca (Mallorca)

Sandwiched between designer boutiques, Can Alomar has a prime city-center position overlooking Palma's grand Passeig de Born. Built on the site of a 15th-century palace, this 19th-century mansion has retained plenty of neo-Gothic and Renaissance accents, but its rooms are decidedly modern. All 16 of them have Bluetooth docks and smart TVs, as well as slate bathrooms with separate tubs and showers (with rainfall and handheld nozzles). The De Tokio a Lima restaurant opens out to two spacious alfresco terraces where guests can order from an excellent (though expensive) menu of Majorcan, Japanese, and Peruvian fusion cooking. By night, the space becomes a popular nightspot for drinks. Can Alomar is from the same owners as Can Cera and Calatrava, but, unlike those two, Alomar doesn't have a spa.

10

Hotel Cort

Palma de Mallorca, Majorca (Mallorca)

Set on a picturesque cobblestone square in Palma's Old Town (opposite a landmark centuries-old olive tree and the  Baroque-era town hall), Hotel Cort is a snug and stylish boutique hotel housed inside a former bank. The 16 rooms and suites are all different -- some have multiple floors, fireplaces, double showers, open free-standing bathtubs, or private terraces -- but all expertly balance chic and cozy, beachy and sophisticated. The hotel's alfresco terrace is one of central Palma's largest and is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists alike. There is a sunny rooftop terrace with loungers where guests can order up drinks, plus a very small plunge pool. Like Can Alomar, there is no spa here.

The St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort

Costa d'en Blanes, Majorca (Mallorca)

From the outside, St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort looks like a McMansion that could easily be in Miami or Boca. The inside feels similarly devoid of Mallorcan character, which is unfortunate, given the very rich charm and artistic flavor of the island. All this being said, St. Regis is extremely luxurious and features-filled. Expect to see black Mercedes and chauffeurs waiting for guests, coteries of merry champagne drinkers at the bars, and foodies gravitating toward the Michelin-star restaurant, Es Fum. St. Regis also has an exquisite spa with a rejuvenating Egyptian brine bath, and its grand, picturesque grounds are a short walk from a quiet beach.

12

Hotel Petit Cala Fornells

Peguera, Calvia, Majorca (Mallorca)

Hotel Petit Cala Fornells is an upscale, family-owned hotel set across two Mediterranean villa-style properties set in lush terraced gardens. It's perched on a hilltop in a quiet neighborhood about 10 minutes' drive from Peguera, with lovely bay views from multiple vantage points and some pretty (if small) beaches nearby. Junior Suites all feature sea-view terraces, though not all of the Grand Suites do and these are only accessible by steps -- of which there are many. Couples may appreciate the four pools, three restaurants, and numerous secluded spots dotting the quiet grounds.

13

Fontsanta Hotel Thermal Spa & Wellness

Campos, Majorca (Mallorca)

The Fontsanta Hotel, Thermal Spa & Wellness is the definition of a destination spa -- a place where guests can rest up and eat well. Dating to the 19th century, the main building has been restored and renovated to combine modern comforts with an old Spanish vibe. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with lush green lawns, wildflower gardens, and winding stone pathways, with private seating areas and hot tubs scattered throughout. Fontsanta's on-site thermal springs have been in use since the Roman era, and it also has a luxury spa, gourmet restaurant, and chic bar with outdoor seating, plus 24-hour room service. The Fontsanta is adjacent to a nature preserve, but there's a busy road nearby, and traffic noise is the only harsh reality to permeate the hotel’s well-cultivated Zen.

14

Hotel Astoria Playa Only Adults

Port d'Alcudia, Alcudia, Majorca (Mallorca)

For a stylish, adult-only retreat in a lively part of Majorca, the 210-room Hotel Astoria Playa is a fine choice. Its two fantastic pools, plentiful loungers, relaxed but festive atmosphere, and friendly service all contribute to its appeal. Though a 10-minute walk from the beach, it's surrounded by loads of local bars, restaurants, and terraces, and offers its own nightly entertainment as well. Rooms are basic and slightly underwhelming for a four-pearl, but the whirlpools in the Suites make them worth the upgrade.
