Bottom Line

G Hotel Gurney is a four-pearl urban hotel located across the street from the beach. Decor throughout is simple but stylish, and the lobby has the most character with eye-catching accent features and furniture. The 312 modern and spacious guest rooms are sleek and understated; they offer modern amenities like free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and free minibars. This hotel's convenient location and tech-savvy meeting rooms attract many business travelers, but on-site features like an infinity pool, spa, and a chic lounge bar make it a popular spot for families, couples, and groups of friends, too. Beach lovers might prefer the luxurious Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa which offers direct beach access and free shuttles to George Town, but higher prices.

Scene

Sleek and refined hotel that's popular with business and leisure travelers

G Hotel Gurney has a mix of sleek, refined decor and interesting accent pieces that give the lobby character -- like the black three dimensional accent wall, oddly shaped lounge chairs, ground-level ottoman style seats, and huge, fabric covered, hanging light fixtures. Throughout the rest of G Hotel Gurney the look is a bit more toned down. Minimalist and modern furniture fills the hotel's restaurants and pool area. This hotel has a decidedly mature feel, and it predominantly attracts business travelers and adult couples, along with a few families who can turn up the volume by the pool and in the public areas. A welcome treat of ice cream is a favorite among guests.

Location

Overlooking the beach, walking distance to restaurants, bars, and attractions

The beach across the way from the hotel isn't ideal for swimming, but it definitely provides for a nice backdrop. G Hotel Gurney's surrounding area is teeming with bars, restaurants, and cafes, giving guests plenty of options to choose from that are just a short walk away. For those who enjoy exploring on foot (or on two wheels from free bicycles available at reception) will find that this hotel's location is ideal. Popular sights like Dhammikarama Burmese Temple (17-minute walk), and Wat Chayamangkalaram (13-minute walk) are within walking distance. Batu Ferringhi Beach is a popular beach that's a 24-minute drive away.

Rooms

Sleek and modern rooms in a neutral color palette

Guest rooms at G Hotel Gurney have a modern aesthetic with a sleek, clean style. Minimal furniture and ample square footage creates uncluttered and calming spaces. All rooms have a soft, neutral palette and wall-to-wall carpeting which helps to buffer noise. Each room is equipped with modern amenities including free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV, a free minibar, and coffee and tea-making facilities. Rooms are notably missing balconies, but large windows let in natural light and offer nice views -- some rooms have water views.

Like the guest rooms, bathrooms have a modern aesthetic. Some have a bright, fresh look, while others have jet black floor-to-ceiling tiles. All bathrooms have a generous supply of Appelles toiletries, a hairdryer, and a walk-in shower. Water leaking out of the shower door is a common complaint.

Guests in Executive Rooms get free access to the Executive Lounge for free shoeshine services and drinks. Note that the space can get crowded.

Features

Infinity pool with a separate kids' pool and pool bar, multiple dining options, and a modern fitness center

G Hotel Gurney offers a variety of features for guests to enjoy both indoors and out. The hotel's pool area offers guests a view of the hotel's urban surroundings and sky high buildings in seemingly every direction. The infinity pool is surrounded by a large pool deck that's set with plenty of free sunbeds and umbrellas for guests. There's also a kids' pool here, making it a popular spot for families to relax and leading some guests to complain about noise. For those looking to escape the heat, the pool bar offers a shaded area to relax with refreshments.

Guests have a variety of food options to choose from. The Tree Bar offers a casual, alfresco dining scene, and well-reviewed food. There's also a cafe, Japanese restaurant, Chili's restaurant, coffee shop, pool bar, and lounge. Guests can sign up for cooking lessons for an additional fee.

Fitness fanatics will also appreciate the hotel's large and modern fitness center that features a wide variety of equipment. Free bikes are available to borrow. A small spa and hair salon offer a variety of treatments. Business travelers have access to an expansive ballroom and several meeting rooms with tech savvy features. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, though the signal is spotty.
