The 443 rooms are modern and hip, all with free Wi-Fi, desks, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Upgrades include kitchenettes, living spaces, and bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. Club rooms get access to a lounge with free breakfast, drinks, and snacks. A restaurant serves buffet and a la carte meals all day, and a full-service bar serves coffee and cocktails in the lobby. Meeting spaces are available on-site. This is a good value in Penang, but it's worth considering the sleek G Hotel Kelawai.

Scene

Contemporary, 2017-renovated hotel with a laid-back atmosphere

The Hotel Jen Penang underwent extensive renovations in 2017 to swap its outdated decor for hip, modern furnishings. The lobby makes a good first impression with a chic wooden-slat bench, ottomans in fuchsia, mustard yellow, and olive green, and diamond-patterned wall decor. Restaurants and rooms continue a similarly contemporary look with lots of wooden furniture, stripes or geometric accents, and artsy wallpaper. An outdoor pool and Club Lounge provide spots to relax, while meeting spaces are available on-site for business travelers. Overall, the atmosphere is relaxed, but some past guests have complained of poor soundproofing in rooms. The central George Town location near sights and restaurants make it a good pick for all types of travelers.

Location

Central location in George Town, a short walk to popular sights

Hotel Jen Penang by Shangri-La has a stellar location in the central George Town area of Penang. One of the area's most popular attractions is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is a 12-minute walk away. Other touristy spots like Little India (16-minute walk), the Clan Jetties of Penang (15-minute walk), Upside Down Museum (eight-minute walk), and Masjid Kapitan Keling (14-minute walk) are all within a reasonable walking distance. Guests also have a myriad of dining options accessible to them in the hotel's surrounding area, as well as shops. Penang International Airport is a roughly 25-minute drive away.

Rooms

Contemporary rooms have desks, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and free Wi-Fi.

Hotel Jen Penang's rooms were renovated in 2017, updating them with contemporary, fun decor. Expect sleek wood furniture and floors, neutral-tone fabrics, fun wallpaper accents, and throw pillows that say "I'm staying with Jen." Rooms are spacious and all have modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, desks, and free Wi-Fi, plus tea- and coffee-making facilities and mini-fridges. Bathrooms have either shower/tub combos or walk-in showers, as well as toiletries and hairdryers. On the downside, some past guests have complained of poor soundproofing.

Suites add separate living spaces and Nespresso machines, while Apartments have kitchenettes. Upgraded bathrooms have both showers and separate bathtubs. Club-level rooms get access to the Club Lounge and its perks.

Features

Outdoor pool with a kiddy pool, all-day restaurant serving buffet meals, and a well-equipped fitness center, but no full spa

Aside from a full spa, Hotel Jen Penang offers all the expected amenities of an upscale property. When on-site, many guests opt to spend their days lounging outside by the rectangular-shaped pool, which has an adjacent kids' pool and loungers. Other leisure facilities consist of a steam room and spa, and massage services can be arranged. A well-equipped fitness center has cardio and strength-training equipment.

For dining, the restaurant here serves buffet and a la carte meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The spread consists of local specialties and international fare, and it receives positive reviews. A lobby lounge serves light fare in addition to coffee and other beverages. Room service is available 24/7. Additionally, Club-level guests get access to a lounge for free breakfast, daily snacks and beverages, and evening alcoholic beverages.

Meeting spaces and a business center are on-site, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
