Bottom Line

Ibis Budget Melbourne CBD is straightforward about its two-pearl amenities, and has the basic styling of a corporate-run hostel alongside features reminiscent of a standard hotel. Though its simple rooms include en-suite bathrooms, none of them are entirely private, with just a curtain separating the bathing area from the bedroom. Perks are slim and basics like Wi-Fi are an extra fee, but the Ibis’ cheap rates in the heart of Melbourne, with lots of shopping and dining nearby, make the property an attractive option for less discerning budget travelers. Those willing to spend a bit more can find larger rooms at the Ibis Styles Melbourne, The Victoria Hotel.

Ibis Budget Melbourne CBD

Scene

Impersonal economy chain decor

The entrance to the Ibis Budget Melbourne CBD, found between a clothing retailer and a fast food joint, could be easily missed if not for the bright blue-light sign hanging down from an awning outside. Inside, the feeling is institutional, with boxy black chairs opposite a front desk that's encased behind glass in a lobby reminiscent of a waiting room in a medical office. Elevators flank the reception area along with a small business center.

Location

In Melbourne's city center, near shopping, dining, and trams

Ibis Budget Melbourne CBD is in the center of the city right off of Collins Street -- a stretch that’s home to luxury boutiques and high-end hotels. The property is in the south end of the Central Business District and within walking distance of most of the area's attractions, including eateries like Red Spice Road, Vapiano, and Lindt Chocolate Cafe. A number of trams run along Collins, and many more can be caught on Flinders Street (which runs parallel) or Swanston Street (which runs perpendicular). Melbourne Airport is about a 25-minute drive northwest.

Rooms

Basic rooms with bunk beds in various configurations

The Ibis’ 146 rooms come in a variety of configurations, from four bunk beds lined against a wall to a queen bed underneath a single bunk. All but the Standard Double Rooms have bunk beds, giving most rooms the layout found in a typical hostel. Stained carpets and general wear and tear are common throughout. Bathrooms are split between private toilets and sink and shower areas covered only by curtains. While the walk-in showers themselves have frosted doors, there’s still a lack of overall privacy. All rooms are air-conditioned with small desks and chairs and flat-screen TVs mounted on walls. (TV views are obstructed from certain beds in bunk rooms.) Family units come with mini-fridges, but there are no coffeemakers
