Bottom Line

The four-pearl Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico is a historic property packed with Art Nouveau charm and character. Its stunning Tiffany stained-glass lobby ceiling is a tourist attraction of its own. The hotel is situated on the main square, or zocolo, surrounded by shops, restaurants, and attractions. The 60 rooms are elegant and traditional but offer such modern amenities as 50-inch flat-screen TVs, high-speed Wi-Fi, minibars, and coffeemakers. The rooftop restaurant has impressive views of the square, and there's another restaurant near the lobby, as well as a piano bar with live entertainment. Eleven event spaces accommodate business and social events. For something more modern, travelers could try the four-pearl Las Alcobas Mexico DF.

Scene

Elegant, grand hotel with historic charm

The Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico is located in a regal Art Nouveau building that was built in 1899 as the Mercantile Center. It later became a department store, then was turned into a hotel for the 1968 Olympics. The hotel was renovated again in 2005 to preserve the building's historic features. Flags mark the entrance. Guests step inside past the doorman to a staircase with a massive Louis XV-style chandelier above. The most stunning feature of the hotel is the Tiffany stained-glass ceiling above the lobby. The historic elevators also include stained glass but on a much smaller scale. The five-story lobby with an open atrium is elegant and grand, full of historic character. Seating in the lobby and on upper floors allows guests to linger and admire the details, such as the birds living in two large cages here. Front-desk staff members wear suits and top hats. The country's secretary of tourism has declared the hotel a treasure of Mexico.

Location

Ideal tourist location in the historic city center

The Gran Hotel Ciudad is situated in the historic city center on one of the four corners of the zocalo. It's within walking distance of multiple attractions, including the National Palace, Mexico City Cathedral (three-minute walk), Estanquillo Museum (four-minute walk), Templo Mayor (eight-minute walk), Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso (nine-minute walk), Palacio de Bellas Artes (11-minute walk), Museo Nacional de Arte (11-minute walk), Palacio de Minería, Colegio de las Vizcainas (13-minute walk), and Alameda Central (14-minute walk). The location is also surrounded by shops and restaurants. Mexico City International Airport is a 30-minute drive away.

Rooms

Traditional, historic rooms with modern amenities

Rooms at the Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico are historic in style but modern in amenities. They all feature high ceilings, 50-inch flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, robes and slippers, minibars, and lounge chairs. Some rooms have canopies atop four-poster beds. Bathrooms have marble countertops, gilded mirrors, rainfall showerheads, and second phones. Given how old the building is, guests should not expect perfection in the baths; they show some visible signs of aging, which guests will find either charming or shabby. Views are of the street, courtyard, or zocalo.

Features

Rooftop restaurant with views of the square, a piano bar, 11 event rooms, fitness and business centers

The rooftop Terraza restaurant serves Mexican fare with wonderful views of the zocalo and National Palace. Alfresco seating is especially nice. Cafe Ciudad de México on the lobby level offers a daily breakfast buffet and an a la carte menu of international selections. Plaza Mayor is reserved for private events and also offers nice views of the square. The piano bar in the lobby serves wine and cocktails, with live piano music several evenings a week. The hotel's 11 event spaces are in the Art Nouveau style. A business center provides computers and a printer for guests' use. The fitness center has cardio and weight machines, as well as free weights. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.
