The Gran Duca di York is a four-story, mid-range hotel dating back to the 19th century. That historical impression begins from the outside, as the yellow exterior and black shutters give way to a lobby, with its extensive collection of original frescoes and religious art. A quiet vibe is created by details like carved stone pillars, comfortable black leather couches, and antique wooden tables set on Moroccan rugs. In the small breakfast area are some grand looking, brass-specter lanterns with oak sculptures and nautical ornaments, furthering the Old World atmosphere. Expect to see other accents like medieval tapestry and paintings that create a relaxed and timeless feeling. There aren't too many places to unwind here, though, and it's best used as a base for recharging after a day of sightseeing. Given it's attractive style and romantic appeal, it's no surprise that the hotel draws plenty of couples on holiday.

The Gran Duca di York is tucked away on a quiet cobblestone street in the center of historic Milan, and the one-way street directly outside helps keep traffic and noise to a minimum. Despite that fact, the hotel is smack in the heart of Milan's action. Just around the corner is the famous La Rinascente department store, and there are bars and restaurants in nearly every direction. It's only a three-minute walk to see Bramante's perspective illusion choir, in the Chiesa di San Satiro, which is itself a renowned Renaissance masterpiece. The city's famous Duomo is only a five-minute walk away, and it will take just a bit longer to reach the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (one of the world's oldest shopping malls). The convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie is a 15-minute walk (or six-minute cab ride) from the hotel, and is where Leonardo da Vinci’s "The Last Supper" is kept. The Duomo Metro station is around five minutes away on foot as well, for getting farther afield. Expect a 35-minute taxi ride to Milan Linate Airport, while public transport will take around 50 minutes. Malpensa Airport will take 50 minutes to reach by car, or one hour by public transport.

The rooms at the Gran Duca di York are not in keeping with the classic Old World style of the hotel's public areas. Instead, they're furnished with modern wood-and-glass tables and lucite chairs. Queen beds are made with white linens and soft yellow accent pillows that blend in with the yellow-and-cream striped walls. Classic Rooms are compact, at 18 square meters (193 square feet) including bathrooms, while Superior Rooms, some of which have front facing balconies, can be up to 24 square meters (258 square feet). All rooms have Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, safes, and minibars with free soft drinks. Superior Rooms also come with added amenities such as electric kettles plus slippers and bathrobes. Views are non-existent from the rear and side of the hotel, due to the narrow streets and close proximity to other buildings. The front facing rooms have balconies with limited views of the street below. Bathrooms are decorated in bland gray tiles and are small for a mid-range city hotel. The tiny stall showers are glass-enclosed with standard shower heads. Hairdryers are provided. 

One of the main features of the Gran Duca di York is its excellent and quiet location in the center of the city. Otherwise, though, there isn't too much on-site. In the lobby, guests can sample some original fresco artwork, while the free breakfast buffet has a good selection of hot and cold options, both sweet and savory. There is a valet parking service (for a fee) and the small hotel bar’s relaxed atmosphere is perfect for pre-meal drinks or a nightcap. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.
