Bottom Line
Located in the Fiera Milano financial district, the Melia Milano hotel was built inside the Alemagna cake factory in 2001. This big hotel is a two-minute walk to the Lotto Fiera metro station -- central Milan is 20-minutes away by train. With over 200 rooms, service and space can feel a little impersonal, but the on-site restaurant, 24-hour fitness center, and meeting rooms are nice amenities. Most rooms have classic and elegant, if slightly generic, style; guests might be disappointed given the hotel's advertised five-star status. The daily breakfast buffet is a quality start to the day with excellent coffee, but only rewards members get perks like discounted parking and free Wi-Fi.

Scene
A big, historic hotel
The expansive Melia Milano resembles a luxury cruise ship with lobby details like a grand staircase with golden rails, traditional furnishings, heavy dark blue drapes, and a grand piano. An ornate china cabinet holds porcelain china. Some of the sofas are beginning to sag but the Alacena restaurant looks modern with light hardwood floors and arched entryways. History buffs will appreciate the buildings varied past as a cake factory and bombing site in World War II.
Location
In the Fiera district of Milan, near a metro station
The Melia Milano is located in the quiet Fiera district of Milan, a mostly residential and business center within walking distance of a University, so most of the nearby restaurants and shops cater to students. The Lotto Fiera metro station is a two-minute walk from the hotel, bringing visitors to Milan's center in about 20 minutes.
Rooms
Classic, elegant rooms, but they're a bit bland for this level of hotel
Most rooms at the Melia Milano have elegant, if slightly generic, style, with red brocade fabrics, gilded carvings by the bed, subtle dotted carpets, and slightly dated wood furniture. Even the Standard Rooms are huge and have separate seating areas. The stately Presidential Suite has blue floral wallpaper and thick carpet, while the Diabolik Comic Experience Room is the hotel's most modern, with hardwood floors plus a private terrace and comic book statuettes. The bathrooms are a nice size but some guests have complained about uncomfortable mattresses. For a completely different design style, check out prices at nearby The Yard Suite & Dependance, which has a much younger, art-forward vibe and is located in a tourist-friendly neighborhood.
Features
24-hour fitness center, on-site Mediterranean restaurant, and Turkish bath
The Melia Milano is loaded with features geared towards business travelers. There's a 24-hour fitness center with accompanying wellness center and Turkish bath, whirlpool, and treatment rooms for massages. Aurora restaurants serves a daily buffet breakfast while the Mediterranean style restaurant serves lunch and dinner. The lobby lounge is a quiet spot for cocktails and wine. A total of 14 meeting and banquet rooms are equipped with modern technology, though fees are charged for Wi-Fi and parking.
