The Starhotels Rosa Grand has taken a left turn from the ornate, classical behemoths that generally pack the center of Milan. While the hotel's modern style might not appeal to everyone, there's enough restrained and prototypically Italian style here to make it a fine bet for travelers seeking a taste of Milan's fashionable appeal. Expect to see lots of clean lines, neutrally hued marble, and subtle shades of red and mauve throughout. Little hints of shimmer and velvet can also be spotted, adding to the sophisticated vibe, while the occasional angular, industrial flourish give it all a bit of edge. The look is complemented by a food and beverage program that's run by Eataly -- the international food-hall chain that's brought classic and contemporary Italian food to many of the world's biggest cities. That alone adds some buzz here, which is only amplified by the property's city-center location. Expect to see a wide cross-section of guests here, from tourists to business travelers. 

Situated on historic Piazza Fontana, the hotel is smack in the center of Milan’s bustling tourist scene, so guests are spoiled for choice when it comes to shopping and dining options. Obviously, the Duomo is the main attraction in Milan, and it’s only a four-minute walk from the hotel. The famous La Rinascente department store is even closer, while restaurants and bars line nearly every street in all directions. It's just over five minutes on foot to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan's most famous mall (and one of the world's prettiest). The nearest metro is at the Duomo. It’s a 20-minute cab ride to Linate Airport, or 30 minutes by bus. For Malpensa Airport, expect an hour of travel by both car or public transport.

Rooms here are attractive, but have a little less edge than what's found in the hotel's common areas. It's a modern take on Italian decor, with subtle neutral tones alongside elegant details like parquet flooring, light wood-veneer furniture, glitzy wallpaper, with matching velvet couches and chairs. Some rooms have exposed concrete-style surfaces that add just the subtlest touch of industrial funk to the spaces. Standard features include free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and separate coffeemakers and electric kettles. Some rooms have balconies and partial views of the Duomo. Rooms at the rear look onto other buildings, so it’s worth checking ahead when booking if you'd like some semblance of a view. Bathrooms sizes vary from room to room, but all have shower/tub combos, generous counter space, hairdryers, and toiletries. Bathrooms in the Suites are large and come with walk-in showers, separate hydro-massage bathtubs, and Etro toiletries.

Features here aren't exactly numerous, but they are on par with most hotels in central Milan -- and there are some top-notch stand-outs offered. That includes the Rosa Grand's drinking and dining scene. The aperitivo hour in the hotel bar is a popular addition, which includes a good selection of free finger snacks with purchased drinks. There are tables and seating along the pedestrianized street as well as in the handsome lounge area. Eataly -- the internationally famous Italian food hall chain -- runs the hotel's dining program. Meals generally score positive reviews from previous guests, though it can be pricey and breakfast isn't included in rates. While the wellness center is free to use, it's quite small and can get busy in the mornings. Resistance machines and a couple pieces of cardio equipment are available. Instructors can be arranged in advance and there's a Turkish bath as well. Eight meeting rooms are available for business events. Pets are welcome, though prior arrangement (and payment) is necessary. Private parking is available in the hotel garage, which also has wall chargers for TESLA electric cars. Keep in mind that parking costs extra.
