Delmar Apartments & Suites

Pollonia has become more popular in recent years, but this traditional fishing village is still bursting with charm, and Delmar Apartments & Suites is located in its center. The hotel's whitewashed exterior is typically Cycladic, and blooming bougainvillea at the unassuming entrance are pretty. The self-catering format for most of its rooms makes for limited facilities -- there's no restaurant, but plenty are nearby. A protected outdoor patio is small but inviting, and cushions on wall benches add bright pinks, greens, and blues to stone floors and white walls. The tiny lobby is simple, and its layout mimics the patio. Shelved ornaments and back-lit precious gems are endearing here, and the ivory block structures dividing them are a cute reflection of the island's architecture. Note, the front desk isn't staffed 24/7, but expat owner George is as welcoming as he is helpful. The atmosphere is relaxed, which bodes well, since the hotel's mostly leisure guests are here for a good dose of relaxation.

Pollonia is one of Milos island's smaller ports, and its restaurants, cafes, and shops encircle a lovely bay inlet. Pollonia Beach is a two-minute walk away, offering a sandy stretch next to lapping crystal waters, although swimming can get tricky when the wind picks up. Many guests rent cars or scooters, though on-site parking can get filled quickly during summer. Papafragas Beach's lagoons are a four-minute drive away. Churches and tavernas dot picturesque streets, and for authentic Greek fare and seafood, Enalion and Armeraki restaurants are a one-minute walk. A mini-market is across the street, but note that stores generally close on Sundays. A bus stops opposite the hotel, as do taxis. Plaka is an 18-minute drive, as are Sarakiniko Beach's sparkling white rocks, and most beaches are good for snorkeling and diving. The ferry to Kimolos is a three-minute walk, while Milos Airport is a 16-minute drive.

Renovated in 2016, rooms range from typical hotel rooms to apartment-style units, and all are done in fresh, modern decor. Keeping with a traditional design, they're dominated by whites and typical Cycladic architecture such as thick archways. Beige or honey-toned bed runners that match cushioned seating areas generally provide the only pops of color. Double Rooms only offer electric kettles, mini-fridges, and handful of tableware, while all other rooms have kitchenettes equipped with electric stovetops, microwaves, toasters, and mini-fridges alongside full dish and cookware sets. Other amenities include flat-screen TVs with dozens of international channels, phones, radio alarm clocks, and safes, plus hairdryers and air-conditioning. 

Pebble touches in some of the bathrooms jazz up floor-to-ceiling concrete, and the showers have rainfall showerheads. Olive-scented toiletries are nicely presented on wooden trays and towels are replaced daily, while linens are only changed every other day. Private balconies or terraces are nicely furnished with cushioned wicker seating. Street-facing rooms get the morning sun, but can be noisy. Quieter ones overlook the sea. Suites have living rooms, and some have two bedrooms and two bathrooms. All can be fitted with cribs.

Given the mostly self-catering format, features here are limited, as the hotel lacks a restaurant, bar, gym, and pool. A Greek breakfast with fresh breads, cheeses, yogurt, and fruits can be delivered to rooms for a fee. The lobby doesn't really cut it as a lounge, but the small outdoor patio is cozy. A basket here offers free-to-borrow books and nestling trees give a secluded feel. There's no spa, but in-room massages and treatments can be arranged. The hotel can also help organize kayaking, diving, excursions, and vehicle rentals, all for a fee. On-site parking is free, but can be limited in summer. Eco-conscious practices include solar panels and energy-saving appliances. Pets are allowed for free and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
