Bottom Line

The lower-middle-range, boutique Riad Zaitouna Chaouen draws couples with its romantic and cheery atmosphere, unmistakably traditional Chaouen architecture, and ideal location inside the Blue Medina of Chefchaouen. Since the hotel scores big on aesthetics, hospitality, and proximity to several tourist attractions, guests are rarely bothered by the six small rooms, which have comfortable beds and charming decor. The property also makes up for its lack of a restaurant or a bar with a shared kitchen and lounge, plus free breakfast served on a rooftop terrace with beautiful city and Rif Mountains views. Guests looking for a more lavish feel and amenities like a pool may prefer the pricier Lina Ryad & Spa.

Riad Zaitouna Chaouen

Scene

Traditional Chaouen architecture and decor in this beautiful, romantic riad

Riad Zaitouna Chaouen is mesmerizing from the get-go, thanks to exteriors painted in the city’s signature, striking blue. The original Chaouen private home was renovated into a hotel in 2016, and the restored interiors are now immaculate. Royal blue velvet sofas in the cozy lobby fit perfectly with the rest of the classic Moroccan tiling and brick arches. A central inner courtyard, with a glass prism top, streams in sunlight, and two outdoor terraces allow for dining areas with panoramic views of the Rif Mountains or the surrounding old town. From the eye-catching traditional decor to cleanliness to the free drink offered upon check-in, the vibe and hospitality here makes this hotel a favorite among young tourists, especially couples.

Location

Within Blue Medina, five- to 10-minute walk to main square, Kasbah, Grand Mosque

Tucked within narrow alleys of the old city, the hotel can be a bit difficult to find, especially with a car. However, guests still cite location as one of the property’s biggest pluses, as it’s situated within Chefchaouen’s iconic Blue Medina and is close to most main attractions. It’s seven minutes (albeit uphill) on foot to the main square of Place Outa el Hammam and under a 10-minute walk to the Kasbah and the Grand Mosque. The Ras El Ma waterfall is just four minutes away on foot. Sania Ramel Airport in Tetouan is an hour and a half away by car. Airport shuttles are available for fees.

Rooms

Tasteful blend of modern and traditional decor; lovely views and mini-fridges

There are only six rooms available at this boutique property, which contributes to the intimate and homey atmosphere. At 107 square feet, Standard Rooms are tight on space, but they’re bright, cheery, and filled with personality. Multicolored rugs on tile floors, comfortable armchairs, and bright blue or red closets are all somewhat modern but incorporate traditional hues and styles. Wall paintings of the city’s iconic blue architecture add some cultural context. Extra-long queen beds are comfortable.

Rooms come with air-conditioning, TVs, and free Wi-Fi (though connectivity needs improvement), but lack work desks and safes. Empty mini-fridges and bottled water are provided, but tea- and coffee-making facilities are not. Suites feature sofa beds.

Bathrooms are also small but are tastefully outfitted hammam-style, with marble walls and painted sink basins. Little enclaves separate the walk-in showers with handheld showerheads. Water pressure is solid. Toiletries are provided, but hairdryers are not. Beautiful windows with carved wooden trims open to lovely mountain or medina views.

Features

Free Moroccan breakfast served on rooftop terrace, plus shared kitchen

Amenities here are on the simple side. The hotel doesn’t have a full restaurant, but a breakfast of traditional Moroccan breads and jams, fruits, cheeses, fresh juices, mint tea, and coffee is served on the rooftop terrace. The meal is included with rates. The food is solid, but the 360-degree views of the old town are even better. Special food requests are easily accommodated, and in addition to room service, guests are also free to use the shared kitchen.

There is also a common, cozy lounge and TV area with a corner fireplace that serves as a mingling area in place of a bar.

There’s no pool, gym, spa, or hammam on-site. Laundry service is provided. Parking is available at a nearby off-site lot for fees. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property but only works optimally in the reception area. There are designated smoking areas within the non-smoking hotel.
