Bottom Line

The 30-room Hotel Grunwald Garni is a two-and-a-half-pearl property that's been run by the same family for four generations. This small, historic property has homey and charming details and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Though the rooms and public spaces are pleasant, they’re bordering on tired, with an outdated style that contrasts sharply with the sleek, updated bathrooms. Rooms have flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges, but no air-conditioning. Other features include breakfast (for a fee), free Wi-Fi, and free parking. However, the location is removed from the city center, and those who want to be closer to town may prefer the significantly more modern TRYP Muenchen City Center.

Hotel Grunwald Garni

Scene

Family-run, historic hotel with a homey atmosphere

Originally built in 1896, Hotel Grunwald Garni has a long history and a welcoming family atmosphere. This property has been run by the Grunwald family for four generations and served as a radio communications posts for the American troops in WWII. The grounds are lovely, with manicured bushes, an outdoor patio with seats and umbrellas, and potted plants. Wood-paneled walls and wood-laminate ceilings and floors create an overall homey vibe in the lobby. Though the antique chairs, printed rug, and floral curtains are charming, they’re rather outdated. The on-site breakfast room is cozy, with green carpeting, white floral curtains, and floral displays on tables. Guests are a mix of couples, friends, and families attracted to the hotel for its value and intimate charm.

Location

Far from the city center, but within walking distance of public transportation

Hotel Grunwald Garni’s location might not be ideal for tourists as it’s far from the city center, although there are restaurants, cafes, and a few shops on surrounding streets. There's also a bus stop that’s two minutes away and an S-Bahn station that takes seven minutes to reach on foot. It’s about 30 minutes to the city center via public transportation. It’s a 35-minute drive to Munich International Airport.

Rooms

Homey rooms with flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges, but no air-conditioning

Rooms at Hotel Grunwald Garni are pleasant and tidy, with olive-green carpets, blond wooden furniture, white linens on the beds, and warm-colored curtains. However, the furniture looks dated and the carpet could use a replacement. Also, some units pass off two twin beds pushed together as double beds (though this is not uncommon in Europe). All rooms have flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges, but there’s no air-conditioning or coffee- and tea-making facilities. Small chocolate bars or bags of gummy bears are left on the pillows as a nice welcoming touch. Bathrooms are far sleeker, with white tile, wooden accents, and glass walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads, and many have vessel sinks, plus heated towel racks, hairdryers, and wall-mounted toiletry dispensers.
