Bottom Line

The Platzl Hotel is an upper-mid-range hotel with a fantastic location, close to all the tourist
hot spots. It has a classic (bordering on dated) style, and includes freebies such as breakfast and Wi-Fi. The
Cortiina hotel around the corner may be a trendier choice, but the Platzl is a solid option for those seeking a central location, tasty dining, and the convenience of a tiny, but on-site, fitness center.

Scene

Historic hotel with traditional touches

The Platzl Munich is a traditional Bavarian
hotel with 167 rooms over five floors. The giant mural on the side of the
hotel is a quirky touch, along with bright blue awnings and flying flags. An antique piano and Persian rug in the
reception area make for a traditional welcome, and wood-paneling can be found throughout. The Platzl Hotel doesn't quite live up to advertised luxury expectations, as it feels more dated than classic to some. However, this is a solid choice for businesspeople -- with over seven conference rooms from which to choose -- and couples looking for a romantic night away, as the Moorish Kiosk spa is certainly romantic.

Location

In the heart of Munich, moments from Marienplatz central square

The Platzl Hotel is located in the center of Munich, a five-minute
walk from Hofbrauhaus, Marienplatz, and New Town Hall –
Glockenspiel. The breathtakingly beautiful Bavarian State Opera
is a three-minute walk away and the S-Bahn and U-Bahn are just around the
corner for traveling further afield. The airport is a 30-minute drive away.

Rooms

Traditional with wood-panelling, mansard-style roofs, and double-glazed windows

Bedrooms are red-carpeted and clean, and have free Wi-Fi and
air-conditioning. Red-carpeted bedrooms have traditional decor, light wood furniture, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning. Plush beds are an upside, but the overall aesthetic is a bit dated, and falls short of advertised luxury standards. There’s good water pressure in the showers, but many of the
rooms do not have baths. The flat-screen televisions have satellite
channels. The Superior
and Deluxe rooms face the quiet courtyard, whereas the noisier rooms are located
at the back of the hotel, which overlooks the Hofbräuhaus -- a rowdy beer hall.
Toiletries, slippers, and a safes can be found in each room. There is free bottled water and comfortable bedding, which
can be hypo-allergenic if requested. The floor-to-ceiling windows provide
plenty of natural light and the leather chairs are snug, if firm.

Features

A 16th-century restaurant with 16th-century pillars, and seven conference rooms for business meetings

The Hotel Platzl’s Pfistermühle
restaurant is in the restored vaults of the ducal mill, which dates back to

  1. The food served here is tasty, but not inexpensive. Free breakfast is served till late in the morning. There are good
conference facilities for board meetings or large seminars of up to 140 people.
All function rooms are air-conditioned and have good natural light. The
"Moorish Kiosk" has a sauna, sun beds, aroma steam bath, rainforest
showers, and fitness equipment, which is all free to use and is decorated in a
Moroccan style, with funky tiles, rich fabrics, and ornate frescoes. However, actual workout equipment is sparse.
