Fresh from a 2017 revamp that overhauled its former French country look, Vintage House is certainly chic and upscale, but whether the new look trumps the old is largely a matter of taste. Take the vaulted Main House, which doubles as the lobby and communal living room. It has something of a split personality aesthetically speaking because the formal furnishings (e.g. glam gray-velvet sofas and plum-colored armchairs) could seem at odds with both the whitewashed, shabby-chic woodwork and the angular, decidedly-modern glass elevator. The end result is a mix of current design trends that either read as intentionally eclectic or a bit of a hodgepodge. That said, this space is still undeniably attractive as are other public areas. The fire-lit wood-and-brick breakfast room, conveying rustic warmth, feels rather unified, as does the lounger-lined pool area. And the grounds, laid out like a cottage compound, remain as lovely as ever. Clientele are largely couples on romantic getaways, given the surroundings, but business facilities here point to the fact that corporate events and their guests do make their way here.

Vintage House is a convenient choice for both pedestrians and motorists since it sits on Yountville’s main street, right off Highway 29; such proximity, though, means some guests may experience noise on their balconies or in their rooms when windows are open. V Marketplace (a mixed-use shopping/dining destination that’s home to the renowned Bottega Restaurant) is only a three-minute walk away, and a trio of Thomas Keller’s eateries (Bouchon Bistro, Bouchon Bakery, and The French Laundry) are equally close. When you’re ready to explore the surrounding region, you can reach either St. Helena or Napa by car in about 15 minutes. Getting to Calistoga takes around half an hour, and, traffic permitting, you can hit the nearest airport (Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County) in about twice that time.

The bright spacious rooms are a highlight here, partly because those in all five categories -- from Deluxe Kings to Bungalow Suites -- come with wood-burning fireplaces, patios or balconies, and modern conveniences like individually controlled A/C, 65-inch flat-screen TVs, Bose alarm clocks with charging ports, laptop safes and free Wi-Fi. Nespresso coffeemakers and minibars cleverly tricked out to look like old-school travel trunks are standard, too, although some past guests say actual storage space is in short supply. Following a 2017 makeover, all options are also handsomely decorated in muted tones, their light linens, walls, and woodwork balanced by dark upholstered headboards and distressed wood floors. Even the generously sized bathrooms, with their classic white subway tiles and slate-gray, stone-topped double vanities look appealing. Better still, all include high-end ESPA toiletries and either walk-in rainfall showers or ones combined with jetted tubs. Potential guest should note that suites add larger seating areas while second-floor accommodations boast cathedral ceilings. Anyone wanting a deep sleep may want to avoid Deluxe-class digs -- these are on the property's perimeter, so they're more prone to noise. 

Since it's part of a larger development, Vintage House offers more amenities than you’d typically expect in a hotel of this size. Chief among them is The Spa at The Estate, a luxe full-service facility with seven treatment rooms and five private suites that come complete with fireplaces, steam showers, and outdoor hydrotherapy baths. Guests can also take advantage of a 24/7 fitness center and a pair of tennis courts, which Vintage House shares with its sister property, or use the hotel’s own pool and hot tub. If you’re combining business with pleasure, there’s an on-site boardroom with the requisite A/V equipment; moreover, The Estate as a whole has some 55,000-square feet of event space in 10 additional venues, both indoors and out. Other hotel perks include a 24-hour front desk; concierge, dry-cleaning/laundry, and turndown services; free newspapers, parking, and hotel-wide Wi-Fi; plus free wine tastings on Fridays and Saturdays.
