Comfortable settings and stellar family-run service draw travelers to the Pension Sofi, a three-pearl property with a quiet location just outside downtown Naxos. Interiors have quirky, contemporary, and traditional decor, and common areas are bright. Rooms are quaint, outfitted with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and charming outdoor spaces -- with Venetian castle views in upgraded units, while Studios have basic kitchettes. Think quality over quantity here -- free transfers and breakfast are pros, but there are no restaurant, pool, or wellness amenities. Travelers wanting a pool should consider the Hotel Spiros, where rates are equally reasonable.
Scene
Quaint and intimate property near Naxos' attractions
This family-run establishment provides warm welcomes and traditional Greek hospitality, attracting new and repeat visitors. Situated on Naxos' outer fringes, the Pension Sofi benefits from tranquility, and its location away from crowds affords a local feel. Cascading bougainvillea are pretty on white exteriors, where turquoise plant pots and painted trim contrast exposed stone, and sidewalks at the hotel's entrance sport fun painted dolphins and a sailboat. An archaeological dig opposite dates back over 7000 years, but there's nothing antiquated about the hotel's interiors, where modern decor is bright amid spotless floors with diamond patterns. Cycladic whites and turquoises in the small lobby have quirky accents from nautical bric-a-brac, and starfish motifs in drapes continue on runners at glass-topped tables. Beach photography and high-shelved baskets overlook comfy seating, where informal breakfast gatherings offer a free (but light) start to the day. Don't expect much else -- there are no bar, restaurant, or pool, but it's the personal touches here that make this humble property a cut above the rest. Note, the hotel is only open April through October.
Location
On a quiet, residential street, 10 minutes on foot from downtown Naxos
The hotel's location on a side street is narrow, but practical. Ten-minute walks along picturesque roads lead to Naxos' wealth of bars, shops, and restaurants, plus the town's port and bustling harbor. A small pebble beach is a five-minute walk, while golden sands at Agios Georgios Beach is 10 minutes farther. Panagia Zoodochos Pigi Cathedral and Mitropolis Site Museum are four minutes away on foot. The Portara-Apollo Temple's site and famed marbled gate are a 12-minute walk, and prehistoric artifacts at the Archaeological Museum of Naxos are half that. A nearby bus runs to farther towns and beaches. Naxos Airport is a seven-minute drive. Port and airport transfers are free.
Rooms
Bright, clean rooms with furnished balconies or patios
All with flower-filled outdoor spaces, individually decorated rooms are outfitted in attractive decor, with light palettes and clean-tiled floors. Suspended lighting, driftwoods, or back-lit inlays in some rooms are sleek, while others are more traditional with nautical or windmill artwork, mostly white decor, and turquoise accents. Starfish and heart motifs framing mirrors are a bit cheesy, but textured wallpapers in pale-blue or pink feels polished. Some higher-category rooms have lovely Venetian castle views. Both standard hotel rooms and Studios with basic kitchenettes are available.
Table and chair sets or cushioned seating areas, flat-screen TVs, kettles, fridges, safes, and AC come standard, while Studios add compact kitchenettes have two-ring hobs, sinks, dishes, and cookware, plus cloths and dish soap. The 2016-renovated bathrooms have stucco stone or pebble-embossed walls, as well as walk-in showers (with rainfall showerheads in some), quirky snail or ship ornaments around classy bowl sinks, towels, toiletries, and hairdryers. Note, some outdoor spaces are shared, beds can be twins pushed together, and upper-level rooms are reached by stairs. Rooms can be fitted with cribs.
Features
Free breakfasts and port/airport transfers and free parking, but little else
With no pool, bar, or restaurant, features are limited at the Pension Sofi, but family owners shine when it comes to service. Though not an official deal, simple breakfasts sourced from the owners' garden consist of free homemade cakes, fruit, and coffee, and similar treats are usually handed out on arrival. Naxos Port and airport transfers are also free, despite the former being in walking distance. Though small, the lobby has a TV. Free parking here is a bonus, and management arranges boat excursions and vehicle rentals (at a fee). Pets are not permitted. Wi-Fi is free throughout the premises.
