Bottom Line

This upscale, mid-sized hotel in the Central Business District (CBD) drips with opulence, from the chandeliers to the marble floors in the entranceway to the large oil paintings. Decor throughout is of a classic style, but some rooms could use a refresh, and those on lower floors can be noisy. Standard Rooms can be quite small. There's a lovely rooftop pool with views of the city and nightly peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the lobby.

Scene

Gilded Age glamour with modern appeal

Corinthian columns and marble sculptures demarcate the entrance to Le Pavillon. The property was built in 1907 and has a Gatsby-esque interior, complete with 14 original paintings and antique furniture on every floor. Guests are a mix of vacationers and business travelers, and the location is within easy access to convention centers and the French Quarter. There's an upscale lounge and an ornate lobby with crystal chandeliers, marble and granite floors, a grand staircase, and parlor furniture. Its glamorous restaurants and event spaces are popular with locals.

Location

Close to all the action, but on the periphery

A 15– to 20-minute walk from the famous Bourbon Street or Morial Convention Center, Le Pavillon's Central Business District location is convenient for both business and leisure travelers. The streets immediately surrounding the hotel are busy with both vehicular and foot traffic, especially on weekdays. The area is primarily commercial, with government buildings, large office complexes, restaurants, and a few other hotels in the area. There's also a taxi rank in front of the hotel for those who don't wish to hoof it.

Rooms

Old-fashioned luxury with present-day perks

Hand-painted ceilings, custom-designed sinks, and richly colored heavy drapes with waterfall valences are just a few of the classic touches found in the rooms at Le Pavillon. This hotel is not a chain and each room has individual character. The only thing to keep in mind is that there are seven different room types, which vary in amenities. Some rooms show their age more than others, but plans are in place to refurbish all rooms soon. The suites have canopy beds, microwaves, free-standing sunken tubs, and fireplaces. All rooms are clean with comfortable bedding, robes, slippers, large flat-screen TVs, and minibars.

Features

On-site restaurant, snazzy event spaces, a pool in the sky, and PB&J at bedtime

The on-site Crystal Room restaurant and bar offers fine dining and a Southern breakfast buffet. Stately meeting rooms with high-backed leather chairs and lavish ballrooms with columns and wooden dance floors make Le Pavillon popular for business events and weddings. There's a business center and an almost 24-hour fitness room with cardio equipment, free weights, and weight machines. The hotel's rooftop pool and whirlpool have cabanas and city views. Parking is limited to the pricey valet variety (typical of CBD hotels), but the service is efficient. Every evening at 10 o'clock, Le Pavillon offers guests free peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made with fresh bread, and served with milk and hot cocoa, in the lobby; this tradition has been going on for over 25 years.
