Set in a typical Parisian block with "Hotel de l'Europe" carved into its smart stone entrance, this budget hotel is bare-bones but welcoming enough. Stepping inside, a pleasant reception area is decorated with a blend of typical hotel aesthetics and turn-of-the-century styling in faux marble and greens and gold. A small family-run hotel, the hotel feels a little dated but the place is generally well-maintained. A single elevator -- tiny and baring a faint whiff of old cigarettes -- ferries guests to one of six floors, while the more energetic can climb the property's steep and spiraling staircase to the hotel's clean but tired-looking hallways. This is a clean and homey property that offers solid value in a good location, but lacks any attention to style. 

The hotel is located on a busy tree-lined boulevard in the République District in Paris's 10th arrondissement. While the area is a little rough around the edges, the location is especially convenient for access from the trains stations of Gare de L'Est and Gare du Nord's Eurostar terminal. The picturesque Saint-Martin canal is also within walking distance and the pretty neighborhood of Montmartre -- featuring the Sacre Coeur basilica -- is a brisk 15-minute walk away. Several Metro lines are less than a 10 minutes' walk and connect to the center of Paris -- including the Louvre and Notre Dame -- in just over 10 minutes. 

The hotel has 37 rooms, all of which are decorated in simple, modern styling with carpeted floors and basic furnishings. While not spotless (some bathrooms show a bit of mold) and with signs of wear, rooms are generally clean and have comfortable beds. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, basic electric kettles, and flat-screen TVs with some satellite channels (including BBC and CNN). Bathrooms are basic and cram[ed with step-in showers  and wall-mounted hairdryers. Despite some soundproofing, lower-level street-facing rooms are prone to some traffic noise. The property also offers a self-contained loft apartment with a more contemporary finish, separate kitchen, and lounge/dining area; this is the one space in the hotel where some attention has been paid to style and polish. 

The hotel serves a traditional French breakfast in a nicely decorated, but rather simple and windowless breakfast room. The breakfast includes warm crusty baguettes, croissants, and pure fruit juices; although it's not included in the rate, it's cheap. Daily newspapers are also provided in French and English. There is a computer terminal and printer available for guests to use. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
