Bottom Line

Hotel Jen (formerly Traders Hotel) is an upscale business property located in northern Pasay, a few miles from the airport. Rooms are spacious and contemporary, with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and modern bathrooms. There are two solid (if slightly pricey) restaurants, two bars, a decent gym, and well-equipped meeting rooms -- but no full spa. The pool area is pleasant enough, with a small bar and a kiddy pool, but is in need of an update. The location right on Roxas Boulevard is convenient for moving around town, although heavy traffic is to be expected during rush hour, making the theoretically 20-minute drive to Makati and the historic center an hour-long trip at times.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hotel Jen Manila by Shangri-La

Scene

A modern hotel for business travelers and families

Traders Hotel used to be elegant and upscale back in the day, but lack of investment hurt its reputation and status, and only returning business guests and those with a short layover in Manila seemed to appreciate its fading grandeur. In 2014 the hotel rebranded as Hotel Jen, and turned into a modern, more tech-savvy and stylish property catering to a younger crowd. Most spaces received a major uplift in late 2014, including rooms and common areas -- but some of its old features remain, including the pool area, which is a little lackluster for an upscale hotel, and a few details here and there in public spaces. Decor is contemporary overall, with lots of different brown and gray hues dotted with cheerful pops of color that add a fun touch to an otherwise corporate property.

Location

In northern Pasay, a few miles from the airport, and near the Mall of Asia

The hotel is located in northern Pasay, directly on busy Roxas Boulevard, one of Manila's busiest thoroughfares. This location is convenient for business travelers, as it offers easy access to the Philippine International Convention Center. Famous Mall of Asia is also a short drive away, and there are a few restaurants and bars in the immediate neighborhood, though the area is a little bit run-down and many may find it unappealing for a full meal. Makati and the historic center are just a few miles away, but Manila is known for its heavy traffic, and reaching those areas could take up to an hour or more during rush hour. The airport is a 15-minute drive away in normal driving conditions.

Rooms

Spacious, bright and contemporary rooms with solid amenities

Hotel Jen features 315 spacious, bright rooms of different categories, including standard (called Deluxe here), Club, and several types of suites. Club rooms and suites are stylish, with light gray carpeting, a few pops of color, and contemporary furniture. Deluxe rooms, however, feature an earth tone palette that makes them look a little blander, although they are still mostly contemporary. Flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, and free mineral water are all standard amenities. Club rooms and suites feature iPod docks, stocked minibars, and DVD players, and suites are equipped with Nespresso machines and free coffee capsules. Bathrooms are modern and clean, but a few have not been renovated and are somewhat underwhelming. Some rooms have striking views of the Manila Bay and the sunset.

Features

An outdoor pool, a gym, and two restaurants -- but no full spa

The hotel offers two dining options: an all-day buffet off the lobby, and a Japanese restaurant where the chef holds the license to handle Fugu puffer fish, a rare delicacy. The lobby bar doubles as a smoking lounge, and features a few tables and couches, as well as  several high tables with colorful plastic stools. Coffee.com is a cheerful café serving hot drinks, salads, and sandwiches. The outdoor pool is pleasant for a few laps, but the deck is in need of an update, and there are only a handful of padded loungers. The fitness center offers several cardio and strength-training machines, as well as free weights. Those planning to hold and event here have an array of meeting rooms to choose from, all equipped with free Wi-Fi, projectors, and other business amenities. The Club Lounge offers expansive Manila Bay views, and free refreshments, snacks, breakfast, and evening cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The hotel does not have a spa.
