Pirwa Colonial Hostel is a small budget property housed in a building that dates back to the 16th century. It's in a great spot, and the views over the adjacent square are lovely. The hostel is quirky and a bit shabby, with lots of small rooms connected by stairways and courtyards. There's a buzzy vibe, with music playing and occasional events like barbecues and parties, so those seeking peace and quiet will want to head elsewhere. Guests kick back in both indoor and outdoor communal areas, and the on-site restaurant is a popular addition. The downside here is that the outside spaces double as smoking areas, and as the hostel is small, the smell tends to spread into dining and non-smoking areas too. It's a favorite with young backpackers, though the smaller dorm rooms attract some budget-conscious families.

Pirwa Colonial Hostel is set on Plaza San Francisco -- a large square that's surrounded by eateries and market stalls. It's about a five minute walk to the center of Cusco, for the cathedral and busy Plaza de Armas. The historic temples at Qurikancha are around 15 minutes away on foot -- or it's a 10-minute drive. Other attractions in the city, like the artisanal market, are not much farther, but it's worth noting that the walk back is uphill. It will also take 10 minutes by car to reach Wanchaq Station for trips to Machu Picchu. Transit time to the airport is about 25 minutes, depending on traffic.  

Rooms are rustic, many with original walls painted white, and come in configurations ranging from doubles to 16-bed rooms. All-female dorms and smaller four-bed dorms are also available. Decor is simple to non-existent, with bright linens and curtains. Some have cute wall stenciling, others have colorful artwork, and some come with no adornment at all. They're basic, as you might expect for the price, but also looking a bit worn around the edges. Additionally, heating isn't always the best and Wi-Fi doesn't reach the rooms. There are free lockers for valuables, free towels, and rooms each have storage of some sort, whether cupboards or wardrobes. Bathrooms are mostly shared, though some Double Rooms have private bathrooms with showers. Keep in mind that bathroom facilities may not be on the same floor as your room. You will also likely hear some noise -- it's a hostel, after all. 

Pirwa Colonial Hostel has a restaurant and bar, which is a useful addition. It serves a free breakfast -- which is a basic spread of bread, jam, and fruit -- plus burgers and sandwiches during the day. There are a number of communal areas, including two courtyards, one with a barbecue area that guests are permitted to use. A pool table, ping-pong, and dart board are on hand for entertainment, plus a TV and a stereo system with CDs. Wi-Fi is free in the communal areas -- it doesn't work in the dorm rooms, but there are internet stations as well. The hostel has a program of events including parties and competitions. Other services include free luggage storage, free towels, and free lockers, plus same-day laundry for a fee.
