Bottom Line

Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, The Inn at Pocono Manor is a five-square-mile resort in the Pocono Mountains. The vast grounds include a golf course, riding stables, and trails for biking or cross-country skiing. Particularly festive in the winter, the resort’s indoor facilities include tennis courts, a spa, and a pool. The rooms have an updated elegance but are lacking in basics like coffeemakers and can suffer from a combination of thin walls and busy weekend events. Overall, the beautifully maintained mid-range Manor and its fun activities win over couples and family groups alike.

Pocono Manor Resort & Spa

Scene

Historic mountaintop manor

Founded by Quakers in 1902, this is the oldest continuously operating resort in the Pocono Mountains. Overall, the property has been beautifully maintained. The gilded country look adds an upscale vibe to the charming interiors, though the patterned carpeting with rather garish floral work can feel overwhelming. The large lobby has dozens of sitting areas, many by roaring fireplaces and stone-lined windows with scenic views. A cozy room with easy chairs and calmer carpeting offers billiards as well as a multi-shelved library with vintage books.

Just outside the town of Mount Pocono, The Inn at Pocono Manor is convenient to I-380 in the heart of Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, known for its camping, hiking, and numerous ski resorts. There’s nothing in walking distance, but it's a short drive north into town while The Crossings Premium Outlets mall is just 10 minutes southeast by car. The popular Camelback Mountain Resort is less than 20 minutes away by car, also to the south, and Wilkes-Barr/Scranton International Airport is about a 40-minute drive northwest.

Rooms

Bright and elegant with original period decor and mahogany furniture

The inn’s 237 rooms adhere to the century-old manor's original period style, with lightly patterned curtains and rich, crafted mahogany furniture. Units are bright and comfortable with renovations done in 2011 holding up well, though there are some visible nicks here and there. Flat-screen TVs are standard, but other basic amenities like mini-fridges and coffeemakers aren’t included. Most of the bathrooms have updated modern fixtures and marble shower/tub combos. Ask for a room away from the elevators, especially on busy weekends when wedding parties and other events may be occurring.

Features

Golf course, spa, pool, tennis courts, and winter sports

3,000 acres of mountain terrain provide for year-round activities, with trails to explore by foot, mountain bikes, or snow shoes. The 18-hole championship golf course is well-regarded, and skeet shooting and archery are available as well. Winter activities include ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, sledding, and sleigh rides. (Kids staying for the Christmas season can have bedtime stories read to them by "elves.") Horseback riding and pond fishing/ice fishing are available anytime of the year. An outdoor playground and arcade game room round out the extensive children's activities. The indoor fitness center has tennis and racquetball courts along with a large variety of cardio machines and weight trainers. Note that extra fees apply to some activities, including tennis, golf, and mountain biking.

The outdoor pool is seasonal, with an indoor pool open all year. The on-site Laurel Spa has steam rooms and nine treatment rooms with all the usual services, wraps, and massages. Weddings are regular occurrences, with meeting rooms and huge ballrooms that have beautiful views. The weekends in general attract events at the Lamplighter Lounge, featuring a bar that stays open late and live entertainment. The Exchange serves an interesting American and continental menu highlighted by dinner fare like baby arugula watermelon salads, beef medallions in burgundy wine reductions, and lobster ravioli. Breakfast gets high marks for quality and variety, and can be included in some room rates.
