A 20-minute drive from downtown on an ugly street in a ramshackle part of Portland
No cooking utensils provided
Unprepossessing from the outside, the low-lying 24-room Nordic Motel offers some of the cheapest lodgings in Portland. The well-maintained rooms have mini-fridges, microwaves, air-conditioning, and 32-inch or larger flat-screen TVs with premium HBO and Showtime channels, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi. Suites include kitchens with stoves and full-size refrigerators but no cooking utensils. Decor consists of blond-wood furnishings, striped carpeting, and small tables (some rooms have leather armchairs). They're clean and cozy but nothing fancy. Free coffee is served daily in the reception area, and fax and copy services are available, along with free parking.
Scene
Budget motel with cooking facilities
The Nordic Motel with a gray-trimmed light-tan exterior is surprisingly pleasant for a budget motel in an unsavory part of town. The single-story property wraps around a parking lot, and there's no real lobby to speak of, although there is a tiny wood-paneled reception area with a counter for free tea and coffee. Guests who stay here tend to be on tight budgets, and its proximity to the airport attracts a fair number of passengers in transit.
Location
On a busy boulevard in an ugly part of town but close to the airport
The Nordic Motel is situated on Sandy Boulevard, a busy thoroughfare that cuts across the gird-like quadrant of Northeast Portland. The area is among Portland's uglier and more economically depressed areas, and it lacks the charm and quirkiness for which the city is known. There are a few minimarts or fast-food restaurants in the area, although there's a coffee cart with espresso drinks across the street. The airport is about a 10-minute drive away, making it a convenient budget alternative for travelers in transit. It's also near the Grotto, a Catholic sanctuary in the forest with a grotto shrine to the Virgin Mary at its center, but most of the city's other attractions are a 20- to 30-minute drive away, including downtown Portland.
