Located a 15-minute walk from the heart of downtown, the hotel occupies a scenic spot on the Willamette River. Restaurants and shops are nearby, but it’s quieter than downtown’s busy street. The 84-room hotel has a lodge-like ambiance that's rather adult with some fashionable flourishes. Highlights include a restaurant/bar and free wine reception, loaner bicycles, and passes to a nearby gym. But, Wi-Fi is free only to Kimpton loyalty program members, and the hotel charges a daily facility fee. Rooms are spacious and stylish, with room service, minibars, and safes. Many feature lovely river views.

That translates into doses of artisanal quirk throughout, from growler bottles in all 101 guest rooms and suites to free daily wine and cheese tastings in the lounge, as well as quick and easy access to the best of Portland's restaurants, pubs, and attractions. Rooms come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi, but they lack kettles and coffeemakers. Beyond the small gym and a public computer, there's little in the way of amenities, including no full-service restaurant.

Inspired by the Golden Era of Hollywood, this 130-room boutique's decor features Art Deco lamps, black-and-white photographs, and heavy drapes. Cozy rooms have a vintage style, as well as plush beds, flat-screen HDTVs, and local coffee, tea, and minibar items. There is no spa on-site, but the restaurant offers fine dining in an elegant, classic style, and the rooftop hosts an open-air cinema during the summer.

Kimpton Hotel Vintage Portland is an upscale boutique property that reopened in 2015 after a multimillion dollar revamp resulting in fresh, hip interiors and a theme based on local wines. The downtown location puts most of the city's attractions within easy walking distance, including the waterfront and Pioneer Square. The 117 rooms are also chic and stylish, almost all with differing layouts, and some feature hot tub terraces. However, past guests have complained of street noise in lower-level rooms and many views are drab. The on-site Italian eatery is excellent, and a free nightly wine tasting is a real draw, though rates are generally on the high side.

Housed in the former Meier & Frank department store building, The Nines is easily one of the snazziest places to stay in the city. Its modern common areas have just a dash of quirkiness, and the 331 rooms are classically chic, with Tiffany-blue accents and elegant furniture pieces. There are also a couple of restaurants on-site, including the rooftop Departure, a trendy pan-Asian spot with a great dim sum menu. Among the hotel's eco-friendly efforts are half-off rates for the otherwise outrageously expensive valet parking for guests with hybrid cars, and wall-mounted bathroom toiletries instead of individual take-home mini-containers. The hotel has a fitness center equipped with a full range of cardio- and weight-training equipment, but no pool or hot tub.

A chic, highly Instagram-able boutique property, the upscale Hi-Lo Hotel, Autograph Collection opened its doors in 2017. Housed inside Portland's historic Oregon Pioneer Building in the downtown area, the property combines industrial elements like rutted concrete walls with softly hued, mid-century-inspired decor.
