Bottom Line

The 112-room Hotel Dom Henrique Downtown is a three-pearl property situated close to the Bolhao Market and Rua de Santa Catarina. It's a bit removed from the river and Ribeira Square, but guests can walk there in about 25 minutes. Rooms are modern and simple, but compact, and equipped with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and minibars. Some have balconies with incredible city views. The rooftop restaurant also has gorgeous city views, while the bar features a DJ on some nights. Other pluses include meeting space and simple fitness and business centers. Travelers who'd prefer to be closer to the action in Ribeira Square and along the river could check out the Carris Porto Ribeira, where decor is a bit fresher and rates are just a touch higher.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hotel Dom Henrique Downtown

Scene

Modern hotel suitable for both leisure and business travelers, popular with tour groups

Renovated in March 2016, this 18-story hotel opened in 1973 and has been owned by the same family since it was built. It is named after Dom Henrique, a Portuguese navigator who was born in Porto in 1394. The hotel doesn't make the most stylish impression from the outside, with its quasi-Brutalist look, but things inside are softer and more pleasant. The look is generic, but modern and fresh, with lots of natural light throughout most major common spaces. The lobby is equipped with a number of seating groups with sofas and chairs where guests can hang out or have small, informal meetings. However, it's the rooftop restaurant -- with its stunning city views -- that's the better place to kick back. The hotel draws business guests as well as couples and families on vacation. It's also popular with tour groups, which can overwhelm the facilities at times.
