Colombo Court Hotel & Spa
32 Alfred House Ave

Not to be confused with Courtyard by Marriott, the 32-room upscale Colombo Courtyard is a stylish, carbon-neutral boutique hotel on a bustling street in Sri Lanka’s capita with an attractive outdoor pool and on-site spa. Urban-chic guest rooms have attractive hardwood furniture, bold colors, and cool industrial-style bathrooms. There are exciting eco-friendly accents throughout, like the sculpture made from 500 recycled bicycles that winds from the lobby to the fourth floor. The hotel has a buzzing dining and bar scene including international fare at The Scarlet Room and great city views and regular live jazz at the rooftop Cloud Cafe. The area can be noisy, though, and guests looking for Indian Ocean views should try the Galle Face Hotel, which has a rooftop pool, though rates will be higher.

Cinnamon Grand Colombo
77 Galle Road

The 501-room, upscale Cinnamon Grand is a Colombo institution; it is a popular place for weddings and conferences, and has an air of importance and activity. All room types have quality amenities such as free coffee and turndown service, but some carpeting and bedding could use a style upgrade. There are two outdoor pools, a whopping 14 dining options, a large fitness center, and an adjacent Thai-based spa from Angsana (in other words, this is a big property and guests should expect to walk often). Late check-out requests are rarely granted, and beware that taxis through the hotel have higher fares than those on the street. Guest parking and Wi-Fi are free.

Thaproban Beach House
Yaddhehimulla Rd, Galle

Part of a local hotel group, the 14-room Thaproban Beach House is a mid-range, beachfront hotel in tourist-filled Unawatuna that has a warm and welcoming vibe. Rooms are simple, but stylish, with hardwood accents throughout plus flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning -- some even have sea views. The hotel has direct beach access plus a full bar and excellent dining. This laid-back boutique property is ideal for budget-minded guests who don't want to sacrifice style, service, or cleanliness for location. There is no pool or spa on-site, but guests have access to both at Thambapanni Retreat, the hotel's sister property just down the road.

Jetwing Lagoon
Pamunugama Road, Thalahena

The 55-room Jetwing Lagoon is an eco-friendly, upscale property with a stunning location between the Negombo Lagoon and Indian Ocean. However, the beach isn't a true beach and swimming is prohibited. Fortunately, there are two outdoor pools -- one by the ocean and another that's stunningly long in the middle of the property. The contemporary rooms are lovely, outfitted with all the expected trappings, as well as bathrooms with deep tubs and separate showers. Quality dining includes a buffet restaurant and a la carte eatery, plus there are three bars, an Ayurveda spa, and water sports. It's worth noting that some areas are showing a bit of age and occasionally airplanes can be heard. It's easily one of the top options in Negombo, but those looking to be closer to town may prefer Jetwing Beach.
