Housed in a charming 16th century Neo-Classical building, Hotel d'Inghilterra has a historic past as the second hotel to open in Rome. It used to be a guesthouse for visitors to the nearby Palazzo Torlonia, and since 1845 has been operating as a hotel. Many famous writers and poets have passed through its doors, including Lord Byron, John Keats, Mark Twain, and Ernest Hemingway. The ground floor area is made up of a series of interconnected rooms that have been arranged into cozy sitting areas filled with bookcases, plush sofas, oil paintings, gilded mirrors, and hanging chandeliers. Black-tile floors and black painted walls give these spaces a dark atmosphere, which may not appeal to everyone. The elegant front desk is made up of an attractive wooden counter flanked by two beautiful Chinese porcelain lamps, and the key cubbyholes behind the counter add a charming Old World touch. The hotel gets many repeat visitors and is popular with leisure travelers, mostly traveling as couples on a romantic getaway. 

Hotel d'Inghilterra is located just off the luxury shopping street Via Condotti, home to many upscale boutiques like Dior, Gucci, Valentino, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Cartier, and Louis Vuitton. There are many restaurants, bars, gelaterias, and cafes in the immediate vicinity of the hotel as well. Many of the city’s most popular tourist sights are reachable on foot -- it's a three-minute walk from the Spanish Steps -- and Spagna metro station is a five-minute walk from here.

The 88 guest rooms and suites at Hotel d'Inghilterra are ornately decorated in a style that may not appeal to all tastes. Think: crystal chandeliers, antique furniture, fabrics like silk and damask, Chinese porcelain, and gilded mirrors. All the rooms and suites are equipped with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes. Marble bathrooms feature pedestal sinks and large shower/tub combos partially covered by glass. Luxurious toiletries and hairdryers are provided. 

The Suites have separate sitting areas and extras like DVD players. Some also include kitchenettes, dining rooms, private saunas, and balconies. The highlight of the Penthouse Suite is its large rooftop garden, spanning over 2,000 square feet, which is partially covered and offers fabulous views over the city’s rooftops. 

Unfortunately the guest rooms and suites have not been well-maintained and are in desperate need of an urgent upgrade. Guests complain of dark and dingy interiors, malfunctioning air-conditioning units, stained headboards and carpets, peeling paint, torn wallpaper, worn-out furniture, dusty chandeliers, issues with hot water, and broken electrical sockets. Street-facing rooms can be noisy because of the sounds of late night revelers and early morning street cleaners and deliveries.

Although it's lacking a spa and a fitness center, the Hotle d'Inghilterra does a good job with dining and drinking features. The free breakfast buffet gets good reviews from guests and offers a variety of breakfast items, including gluten-free options. Café Romano is open all day and serves classical Italian cuisine both indoors and on a charming sidewalk area. The wood-paneled British-style Bond Bar has a sophisticated vibe and serves coffee, drinks, and cocktails throughout the day. Two elegant meeting rooms are available to rent for meetings and events, and can seat up to 60 guests in auditorium style. The rooftop garden can also be rented for special events like parties, banquets, or dinners and can accommodate up to 400 guests. Guests can reserve private parking at a nearby location for an extra charge. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel but the connection is slow and unreliable. Pets are welcome at no extra charge.
