Bottom Line

Hotel Teatro Pace is a small, older property situated on a quiet street in the heart of Rome’s historic center. It's a short stroll from Piazza Navona, and its prime location and classic architecture are some of the hotel’s major draws, as many other amenities are lacking. With no elevator, no lounge, and no breakfast room, its 23 guest rooms with traditional decor that's a bit dated are the only true available space. Luckily, units tend to be large, with high ceilings and well-maintained wood accents. All units come with AC, large flat-screen TVs, minibars, kettles, and free Wi-Fi, and some have balconies with views. Overall, the three-pearl hotel offers good value for the central area. Travelers looking for modern digs might consider Navona Luxury Apartments, which are slightly pricier but have a more updated style, as well as a separate living area.

Hotel Teatro Pace

Scene

Old World touches and a relaxed atmosphere for couples and solo travelers

Hotel Teatro Pace is located in a 17th-century building that has retained much of its original architecture. This lends a classic air that lacks a contemporary touch that some may prefer. The traditional decor and striking spiral staircase will appeals to travelers seeking accommodation that gives a taste of the old-fashioned charm of the historic center. While the area outside can be lively on the weekends, the hotel itself is quiet and a bit reserved, which tends to attract couples and solo travelers who want a feel for the touristy center of Rome without any unnecessary fuss.

Location

Central location, a short stroll from Piazza Navona, close to restaurants and bars

Situated between Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Navona, most of Rome’s major monuments are with a 15-minute walk from Hotel Teatro Pace. Numerous restaurants and bars line the narrow streets around the hotel, and the neighborhood has a quintessential Roman feel. There are no metro stops in the area, which is typical of the historic center. Buses run on major roads nearby, however many of the streets immediately next to the hotel are pedestrianized or allow only limited traffic. There are taxi stands at either end of Piazza Navona, and Rome’s Fiumicino Airport is about a 40-minute drive away.

Rooms

Full of original architectural character, with modern marble bathrooms

Many of the guest rooms at the Hotel Teatro Pace showcase the building’s original character, including exposed beams and high ceilings. The wood touches are repeated in the traditional dark-hued furniture. The heavy, brocade yellow and blue bedcovers and upholstery are inspired by 19th-century floral design and may feel understandably dated to modern travelers. However, the units are equipped with modern essentials, including AC, flat-screen TVs, mini-bars stocked with water and wine, electric kettles with free tea and coffee, safes, and free Wi-Fi.

While the rooms are conventional in style, the marble bathrooms have been recently updated, and tend to be relatively spacious, with either stall showers or shower/tub combos and bidets, but hairdryers are old tube-style, and toiletries are limited to bars of soap. Six rooms have balconies which look out over the terraces and courtyards of old Rome. The Junior Suite, the largest room in Hotel Teatro Pace, has a terrace large enough for a table and chairs, and offers views of the nearby church of Sant’Agnese in Agone on Piazza Navona.

Features

Striking staircase leaves little space for other features, and no elevator

The most notable characteristic of the hotel is the beautiful stone spiral staircase that takes up most of the entryway and leads to the rooms spread across three upper floors. However, the commitment to preserving the historic 17th-century details means that there is no elevator. In fact, the staircase takes up so much room that there is little space left for a front desk and no lobby area. While there is also no breakfast room, a morning meal is still available. A continental breakfast can be ordered the day before and delivered to the room at a pre-requested hour. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.
