Bottom Line

The family-friendly BlueBay Beach Club is a mid-range, beachfront mini-resort hotel with a big outdoor pool featuring a hot tub and snack bar. Other winning features include an on-site restaurant, kids' club, live entertainment, and access to a small rocky beach. The 158 spacious, apartment-style rooms can sleep up to six and include sitting areas, balconies or terraces, and fully equipped kitchenettes, but dated room decor and extra fees for safes, Wi-Fi, and international TV channels can be bothersome. The location is also removed from town and other beaches. Travelers may want to compare rates with Orquidea Hotel, a nearby alternative, but that hotel isn't open year-round.

BlueBay Beach Club

Scene

Family-friendly, beachfront hotel -- but somewhat dated overall

The BlueBay Beach Club is a resort-style property situated in a yellow building finished with sloping stone accents. Tiers of balconies extend off each floor, forming a pyramid shape. Interior decor is something between bland and dated -- beige tiled floors, yellow and red accents, and wicker furniture make regular appearances, though nothing is outright offensive. The exterior is more impressive -- palm studded, well-manicured lawns are strewn with loungers and the large, lagoon-style pool makes for an attractive centerpiece with a wood bridge, stone accents, and lounge chairs under thatched canopies. Though the hotel could use a decorative revamp, it's fairly clean and well-kept and has lots of amenities. It's solidly geared toward tourists, especially families with children.

Location

Quiet waterfront location, 10-minute drive to Playa del Inglés

The BlueBay Beach Club is situated in a quiet area of San Agustin, on a gentle hillside that abuts the sea and includes access to a small private beach. Other resorts and apartments are in the vicinity, and a handful of restaurants and a market can be reached on foot in about six minutes. Playa del Inglés, with its beach, restaurants, and nightlife, is about a 10-minute drive. Gran Canaria Airport is about a 20-minute drive, while Las Palmas is about 40 minutes. A flying school adjacent to the property causes some noise, but most guests don't find it a nuisance.

Rooms

Spacious apartments with fully-equipped kitchenettes -- but decor and amenities are dated

Room size is a major selling point here, especially for families: The apartment-style units can host three to six guests depending on size. Rooms include terraces or balconies, sitting areas, and fully-equipped kitchenettes with tables and chairs, microwaves, fridges, burners, and cookware. Upgraded rooms might add balconies with whirlpools or hammocks, plus more living space. But, the rooms' "sound systems" are old enough to include cassette players, TVs are small, and international channels cost an extra fee. Other extra fees include those for use of safes and Wi-Fi. Guests sometimes note wear-and-tear, and decor is dated and basic -- beige tiled floors, wicker furniture, light wood cabinets, and dark navy patterned comforters with matching drapes. Bathrooms are fairly roomy, though, with separate shower stalls and tubs. Housekeeping comes five times a week, though towels and bed linens are not changed daily.

Features

Huge swimming pool, half-board options, and family friendly amenities

This resort-style hotel's main attraction is its large, lagoon-shaped pool that includes a hot tub. It's surrounded by palm tress and loungers and a snack bar. The grounds are nicely manicured and the hotel offers direct access to the water, though the beach is small and rocky. The hotel also has a gym and sauna, though some guests complain they're dated. Free on-site activities include live entertainment and archery, and the hotel offers supervised children's activities, plus family friendly amenities like cribs and laundry. The hotel offers several dining package, including room-only, breakfast only, or half-board (breakfast and dinner) options. Meals are served in a decent casual restaurant on-site, which offers buffet and a la carte options. A mini-mart style shop on-site offers options for self-catering. Extra fees can be annoying -- guests pay for things like beach towels, Wi-Fi access, use of safes, and international TV channels. The front desk is open 24 hours.
