An enormous pergola mounted on oblong columns forms a grandiose entrance to The Dana, whose original building dates to the 1960s. Inside the lobby, earth tones and wooden furniture mimic the covered walkway outside, giving a cohesive first impression that doesn't quite carry over into every part of the hotel, which has a newer section constructed in 2004. Overall, it's a relaxing spot on the bay filled with families enjoying water sports or relaxing after trips to nearby SeaWorld.

Right on West Mission Bay Drive, The Dana is the closest hotel to SeaWorld, and is a short drive to other major San Diego attractions, including the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. The hotel is less than a mile from the beach and Belmont Park. SeaWorld is a 15-minute walk away, and it's a 15-minute drive to San Diego International Airport.

The rooms here are in two separate parts of the hotel's grounds: the original 1960s Marina Cove building, and the Water's Edge rooms and suites built in 2004. This accounts for the disparity in amenities among the different rooms, with some in need of renovation and others well maintained despite plain, dated furniture. Some rooms have patios, some have views of the marina or gardens, and some have views of a parking lot. The newer Water's Edge rooms are slightly larger than those in Marina Cove, with exposed ceiling beams and wet bars, bay views, and sofa sleepers, making them more ideal for families. Mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers come standard in all.

The heart of The Dana is its private marina on the bay, with paddle boats, kayaks, and sailboats docked for rental. It also offers direct access to the Mission Bay bike path, with on-site bicycle rentals. The hotel's not in walking distance to other restaurants but does have two on-site. The Blue Pearl only serves breakfast, but the Firefly Restaurant and Bar serves a full menu of contemporary cuisine and cocktails. There's also a poolside bar open seasonally. The two outdoor pools are set among gardens with shuffle board and a ping pong table. The Dana Boarding Pass (the daily resort fee) covers shuttle service to SeaWorld, discounted tickets, Wi-Fi, and access to a windowed fitness center with treadmills and stationary bikes. For events, a ballroom and meeting space are available with on-site catering, with views of the bay and frequent SeaWorld fireworks included.
