Bottom Line

Aria Suites comprises just six high-end villas set on one of the highest points just outside the center of Fira, on the west coast of Santorini. The setting not only takes full advantage of the specular views, but it also feels secluded while being a short walk from the touristic hub. Super-attentive yet unobtrusive service is a real highlight, while the villas' high-end amenities and Champagne breakfasts are also outstanding. Being popular with families means excitable kids might occasionally spoil the peace, especially at the pool, though otherwise couples will find it one of the most relaxing and well-serviced places in the area to spend a romantic vacation.

Scene

Typically pristine boutique hotel with top-level service and vistas

Upon first arrival there's little to distinguish Aria Suites from the numerous, similarly upscale accommodations on the island -- immaculate, zinc-white walls molded around traditional Aegean architecture set against piercing blue sky. A pristine sun terrace lined with volcanic rock and dotted with potted shrubs and pretty flowers is also cut from the classic Santorini mold. With just six villas, however, the boutique property has a more bijou and secluded feel than most, and with staff that balance uber-attentive with discreet and unobtrusive better than almost anywhere. Located on one of the highest points in Fira, the property offers stunning views over the caldera -- the main draw for any visitor -- that are also without doubt some of the finest on the island and make for some truly spectacular sunsets. While clientele are mostly couples -- with special treatment for honeymooners -- spacious suites also attract families with children.

Location

Spectacular views from the edge of Fira popular center -- without the steep steps

The hotel is located just off a pebbled pedestrian road at the edge of central Fira, one of the most popular areas of Santorini. Set away from traffic and a stroll to the touristic center, the setting is peaceful and relaxing while also easily walkable to plenty of local restaurants, galleries, and chic boutiques. Being set high on the west side of the island also guarantees spectacular views of the volcano and Aegean sea, while access doesn't involve any steep steps. Santorini Airport is around 10 minutes away by road.

Rooms

Fresh and elegant villas with outstanding amenities and sea-view terraces

Each of the six villas takes its name from well known arias -- Carmen, Aida, Tosca, Norma, Rigoletto, and La Boheme. Decor is fresh and unfussy with an elegant yet homey quality, characterized by lots of bright white with pale aquamarine accents, light-wood and wicker furnishings, and stone tile floors. There is plenty of living space in each villa that includes separate bedrooms, lounges, and small dining areas. Amenities are where the accommodation really shines, with everything from personal laptops, iPod docks and speakers (in some villas), and satellite TVs, to bathrobes, well-stocked minibars, and choice of luxury bedding. Bathrooms also impress, all coming with upscale, natural Korres products and jetted tubs. All suites also face the caldera, meaning gorgeous views from private furnished terraces come as standard. Air-conditioning, beach- and pool-towels, hairdryers, and safes are also in all villas.

Features

American Champagne breakfast served overlooking the Aegean

While the service is near flawless, there's not a great deal of facilities in this boutique hotel. An a la carte "American Champagne" breakfast can be enjoyed either in-room or on the terrace and is always included in the rate. The swimming pool is just about large enough for a few strokes, though is mostly for cooling off (it's unheated) between lounging on the white sunbeds lining the clay-colored deck. A poolside bar -- all white, and lined with beige-leather-cushioned stools -- also provides drinks and snacks, and while there's no on-site restaurant, romantic candlelit dinners can be arranged. Wi-Fi is also available free of charge, though can be intermittent. In-room massages can be arranged upon request.
