Bottom Line

From Swarovski crystals above the in-suite hot tubs to multiple chartering services, this 11-suite boutique luxury hotel was designed to appeal to a high-level clientele. Ideal for honeymooners or guests looking for a romantic getaway, Astarte Suites makes a supreme effort to provide guests with discretion and privacy. The property offers upscale contemporary decor -- it's much more luxurious than the nearby Apanemo Hotel -- and all of the chic suites are designed after a different ancient Mediterranean culture. Those wishing to take advantage of Astarte's location in Santorini's quiet southern area may find it inconvenient when trying to reach many of the island's popular tourist attractions, however.

Scene

Upscale, contemporary vibe and jaw-dropping sea views

Astarte Suites was designed to catch your eye. Supplementing the island's traditional Cycladic architecture, the hotel has added natural materials to the design and decor, creating an upscale, contemporary vibe. The style is dramatic and theatrical (almost kitschy) in a few places, and some of the small decor accents don't always work -- lava rocks jutting from white walls are reminiscent of a rock-climbing gym, and the gold mosaic tiling in the Honeymoon Suite bathroom may strike some as a touch garish. But few will notice these incongruent details, as the overall feel is undeniably decadent, and the stunning views will steal guests' attention, especially during sunset. The infinity pool with breathtaking sea views is the centerpiece of the property. Expect a wealthy clientele as Astarte Suites has high-end (and unparalleled) services.

Location

Hanging cliff-side in southern Santorini; farther from tourist attractions than other area properties

On the southern end of Santorini, Astarte Suites has fantastic panoramic views of the area’s caldera and volcano. While Akrotiri is not ideal for those looking to visit many of the island's popular tourist sights, it is far enough from the hustle and bustle of larger towns like Fira to make for a quiet and private holiday spot. However, those with any mobility issues may want to look into other options as more than 100 steps stand between the hotel and main road.

Nightlife may not be as exciting as in Fira or Oia, but there are a few small bars nearby, as well as the two-star Michelin-rated Psaraki fish restaurant. Southern Santorini attractions include the impressive Red Beach, Pharos lighthouse, and the town of Akrotiri itself. Similar to Pompeii, it is an archaeological site preserved by volcanic ash and possible source of inspiration for Plato's theory of Atlantis.

Rooms

Great views, chic style, and private hot tubs

All 11 of Astarte's soundproof suites are individually styled after a particular ancient Mediterranean culture; some look polished and stylish, others rustic-chic. Within the five different suite categories, guests can expect a private hot tub with a glittering Swarovski ceiling piece (not to mention a jaw-dropping view of the sea), bathrobes and slippers, king bed, iPod docks, minibar, and LG flat-screen TV. If there is a dominating decor feature within the suites, it would be mosaics; floors, accents, showers -- all are outfitted with tile or stone mosaics.

As other area hotel rooms are not as lavish as Astarte's spaces, they are also not as eccentrically styled. The themed decor can result in some interesting accents, but most will feel that they add character. Some suites have huge terraces equipped with a dipping pool and lounge area -- all facing a gorgeous view.

Features

Indoor/outdoor infinity pool and super high-end services

Astarte Suites can check off all of the typical four-star category features, with the property offering a hot tub, chromotherapy infinity pool, excellent on-site restaurant serving Mediterranean fare, and room service. Yet what sets the venue apart are the other high-end services and perks. Welcoming guests with champagne and fresh fruit, Astarte doesn't stop trying to impress until after checkout. The hotel is happy to arrange for custom tours and excursions, flower delivery, and car rentals. But if that's not enough, chartering services are available for things like private jets, yacht, helicopters, and sailboats. While there’s no dedicated spa, Astarte provides in-room massage services and can provide beauty treatments on request. Included in guest rates are free airport/pier transfers, a la carte breakfasts (served on guests' private verandas), parking, and Wi-Fi.
