The 41-room mid-range Smaragdi is located just a few hundred feet from the volcanic pebbles of Perivolos Beach, one of Santorini's finest. With bright and cheery garden grounds, it has a family-friendly vibe. There’s no on-site restaurant, but all of the spacious rooms have kitchenettes, and there’s a poolside snack bar and barbecue area. There's a children's playground, and it's also hard to beat for anyone on a budget looking for a quiet, self-catered stay in Perrisa. However, room decor is bland and the more budget-friendly room options have cramped spaces and old tube TVs.
Scene
Traditional Cycladic architecture with a colorful Mediterranean style and flowering gardens
With style and character not always found in mid-range hotels, the Smaragdi has a peaceful, cheery vibe. Lively gardens full of large rocks and colorful flowering plants are peppered throughout the grounds along stone and brick paths. The venue's architecture is based on traditional Cycladic style, but instead of stark whites and ocean blues, the color scheme falls more in the spectrum of cheerful yellows with mahogany wood accents. The large tiled lobby has arched ceilings with exposed wood beams as well as classic wood furniture. Paintings and sculptures, mostly reflecting the Cyclades, are ever-present, as are random items re-purposed for art. There’s even a small outdoor nook used as an art workshop. However, overall the property feels a bit dated with furniture that shows wear and tear and nearly-empty walls.
The poolside bar is a casual affair with a simple, shaded seating area of tables and chairs. Each table is topped with a small succulent in a colored pot, a perfect example of the Smaragdi attention to detail. Note that the separate kids’ playground is on gravel and may not be suitable for very small children. The hotel does attract mostly families.
Location
A few hundred feet from one of Santorini's most beautiful beaches
The Smaragdi is located in the Perissa section of Santorini, a few hundred feet from the black pebble beach of Perivolos -- often considered to be the island's most beautiful. Here, beachgoers can be found participating in different activities or just lounging on sun chairs. Perissa is home to several restaurants, bars, and shops, a majority of which lie within a few minutes walk from the hotel. Cars are needed to reach the capital Fira, about 20 minutes north, and Oia, about 30 minutes north. Santorini Airport is a 20-minute drive from the hotel.
Rooms
Spacious rooms with kitchenettes, balconies, and views; different categories available for different needs
Each with their own character, the 41 rooms at Smaragdi Hotel come in four different categories ranging from basic Petit Budget rooms to whirlpool-laden Honeymoon Suites. Double-level Deluxe Apartment units are ideal for families traveling with children, while the no-frills Petit Budget rooms work well for anyone traveling with an eye on their wallet (who don't mind worn furniture and dated tube TVs). Regardless of room choice, all spaces are clean and feature air-conditioning, large balconies or patios, and sea or mountain views. The medium-sized kitchenettes have kettles and mini-fridges and include all the necessary dishes and utensils for a self-catered holiday. Higher category spaces have flat-screen TVs.
Features
A large outdoor pool area with a hot tub is the main attraction.
A huge feature of this hotel is its proximity to the famous black sand (well, pebbled) beaches of Perivolos. On-site, however, the hotel has a great tiki-themed pool area with plenty of sun loungers, thatched umbrellas, a bar serving snacks and drinks, and large hot tub. There isn't a full-service restaurant on hand, but guests can order from the pool bar during certain hours or fire up the hotel's outdoor barbecue. Breakfast is also available for a fee. Besides having an on-site playground, the hotel provides additional kids’ activities. Free Wi-Fi and private parking are included in the stay.
