Hotel San Teodoro is geared toward a relaxing holiday. Guests can play a few sets of tennis and then surrender to the Mediterranean sun and nap under a palm tree, or take a dip while enjoying a glass of something in the poolside bar. Everything is clean and uncluttered, with a modern, casual aesthetic. The bar and restaurant are furnished with white, molded plastic chairs, not fancy or fussy, with lovely views of the mountains or pool. The restaurant buffet has tablecloths and wine glasses, but there’s no art on the walls. Nor is there any real color, which, combined with the low ceilings, creates an underwhelming atmosphere.

The lobby feels modern and luxe, with curvilinear architecture, beige rugs, and comfortable couches. But, again, there’s neither art nor plants to bring the space to life. The San Teodoro does not offer the all-entertainment, all-the-time vibe of many beach resorts, but its calm, restrained style is a peaceful haven for travelers who plan to explore Sardinia.

Hotel San Teodoro is in the middle of nowhere but within driving distance of plenty. Olbia’s airport is a 30-minute drive northwest, and the Sardinian beaches, including gorgeous La Cinta, are a few minutes drive, or shuttle ride, from the front desk. Another sightseeing option is the harbor of Ottiolu, a 10-minute ride southeast. It is a 1.2 mile-walk to downtown San Teodoro, but the roads lack pavement or shoulders, making the trip unsafe for pedestrians. A rental car is necessary for visitors who want to tour the area.

Rooms at the San Teodoro are basic, with modern, monochromatic decor and private balconies furnished with tables and chairs. Spaces facing the back of the hotel have better views and aren't subject to street noise. Rooms for families are more colorful than other units, but the extra bed is pushed in beside the double, making it feel cramped. Bathrooms are large with modern tile and walk-in showers. Satellite TVs offer pay-per-view movies as an alternative to the nightclub scene. In-room safes are not large enough for laptops, and there are no dressers or drawers for smaller items.

The San Teodoro is low-key in terms of activities, but there is a lovely, quiet outdoor pool by which to lounge. (Keep in mind there are no beach umbrellas or huts under which to escape the Mediterranean sun, so bring sunscreen.) There are also tennis and beach volleyball courts, and a playground for kids. The poolside bar is quiet, but the bar and lounge offer live music and entertainment until late in the evenings. The buffet restaurant is not elegant. Nor is the food praiseworthy, but breakfast is free and plentiful. One night a week there is a Sardinian-themed menu, which is likely more special than ordinary buffet fare.
