Bottom Line

A quiet alternative to San Francisco's busy downtown hotels, the luxurious Inn Above Tide is within walking distance of the shops, restaurants, and ferry in quaint, ritzy Sausalito (the scenic ferry ride to the city takes about 30 minutes). The 31 sophisticated rooms here have sweeping bay views and most come with patios overlooking the water. While there's a spa, free breakfast, and free wine and cheese receptions, its lack of a pool and an on-site restaurant may deter some visitors.

Scene

Romantic hotel with seaside vibe

Despite its location near San Francisco, the Inn Above Tide feels worlds away, with a West Coast seaside feel. The building has wooden siding and and unfinished grey wood railings. The lobby is small and has a reception desk with two check-in stations. The inn aims to be romantic, and it's a popular place for marriage proposals. As it's both on the quiet and the pricey side, the guests here tend to be more mature. Its location outside of the city makes it inconvenient for most business guests and its lack of child-focused amenities means it's not a huge hit with families.

Location

In Sausalito, under a half-hour from San Francisco by car or ferry

The Inn Above Tide is situated in Sausalito, a bedroom community of San Francisco, at the edge of the Bay. The hotel is right next to the ferry terminal and a 10-minute walk from Sausalito's little main drag. It's a half-hour drive into downtown San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge or a 25-minute ferry ride to San Francisco's Ferry Building. There are plenty of buses that run from Sausalito into the city; athletic guests can also borrow bicycles from the reception and ride across the bridge and into downtown.

Rooms

Light, spacious rooms and suites right on the water's edge

The rooms at the Inn Above Tide range from Double Double Superiors to upper-floor suites with panoramic bay views. All are spacious and airy, with light grey or beige walls, white linens, and light wood furnishings. Most rooms have balconies and fireplaces, and all of them come with large flat-screen TVs, DVD players, iPod docks, minibars, and binoculars. Views are of the bay, with the San Francisco skyline in the background. Bathrooms have showers and deep soaking tubs (some with whirlpool jets) and Bulgari toiletries.

Features

Generous breakfast buffet and daily wine and cheese receptions, but no restaurant

On-site amenities include a DVD library and a spa offering a variety of massages (in-room treatments are also available). Wi-Fi is available for free throughout the property and valet parking is available for a fee. Every morning, guests are treated to a large continental breakfast buffet with five types of fruits and plenty of fresh baked goods. A free wine and cheese reception is held every evening. There's no restaurant on-site, but guests can order meals to their rooms through a local restaurant delivery service.
