Bottom Line

The 15-room Alcoba del Rey de Sevilla is a quirky, intimate bed and breakfast with beautiful hand-painted tiles and furniture. The property has a few issues -- including noise from the street and other rooms, plus the need for a fresh coat of paint in some areas -- but has attractive amenities including a lovely rooftop patio and garden with a small outdoor hot tub. This property, built around an atrium with Andalusian archways, has a personal feel and lots of character; all rooms are decorated with touches that evoke Moorish architecture and some have luxe bathrooms with intricate tile work. The upper-mid-range hotel is situated in the safe, if slightly bland, neighborhood of Macarena about 30 minutes north of the town center on foot.

Scene

Quirky bed and breakfast with romantic interiors

The Alcoba del Rey de Sevilla is a three-story sand-colored stucco building situated on the corner of a quiet street. It's built around an atrium onto which the building hallways open; Moorish archways adorn the lobby as well as the hallways throughout, and the hotel is decorated with antique Mediterranean lanterns, rose colored walls, and gorgeous hand painted tile work. Couples tend to constitute a large number of the guests here. Guests have noted that the hotel is fairly light on amenities, and may be best suited to those seeking a romantic place to stay within reasonable walking distance of the center of town without the expectation of spending a lot of time on the premises. The furniture and accessories in the rooms are all available for purchase.

Location

In the Macarena neighborhood, on a fairly calm street about 30 minutes north of the city center on foot

The neighborhood around Alcoba de Rey is somewhat bland; the surrounding streets are lined mostly with residential buildings and the occasional cafe. The bulk of tourist attractions -- María Luisa Park, Barrio Santa Cruz, Plaza de España -- sit about a 30-minute walk south, or a 20-minute bus ride via a line that stops a few blocks from the hotel and runs regularly. Correctly timed, public transportation to the airport can take as little as an hour with a single transfer, or about 15 minutes in a car.

Rooms

Appealing rooms with canopy beds, tile floors, and large bathrooms all named after a character in the Moorish history of Spain

The rooms here are a riot of color and ornate visual details including hand-painted furniture and tiling. Dark wood door frames with tear drop archways, tin sinks set in stone vanities, filigreed lanterns, and draped sheer curtains lend these rooms an attractive Moorish feel. Bathrooms have a fully tiled shower, sometimes open on two sides through arched doorways, as well as a rainforest showerhead. Some larger rooms have a full canopy hanging from the four-poster bed. All rooms have a safe, a flat-screen TV, and a tiny balcony. Larger rooms have an iPod dock, slippers, and a whirlpool tub with intricate tile. The rooms have a cozy, romantic feel.

Features

Outdoor patio with hot tub and lobby alcove where breakfast is served

This charming bed and breakfast has lots of style and a few nice amenities. Guests generally comment favorably on the breakfast, in particular the juice, which is served for a fee in a small area near the lobby. There is a lovely deck and garden on the roof of the hotel, which is open seasonally and is furnished with an outdoor hot tub.
