Bottom Line

The upper-middle-range Hotel San Gil is a charming property located on the northern edge of the historic center of Seville. Although there are few major attractions within easy walking distance, two bus lines and the tourist hop-on, hop-off bus stop nearby. Its 85 rooms vary in size and decor style -- classic or modern -- but all feature flat-screen TVs, minibars, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and safes. The restaurant serves a great breakfast buffet (not included in the standard rate) and tasty regional cuisine for lunch and dinner. It shares a lovely courtyard with the hotel bar, which has a long drinks menu and a few snacks. The small rooftop pool is a great perk in the hot summer months, and there are seasonal flamenco shows on-site. In this price range, Hotel Alcazar is a good alternative closer to the main sights.

Scene

Charming property with plenty of Andalusian flavor and a lovely courtyard

Hotel San Gil is housed in a beautifully renovated small palace dating back to 1901. One of the hotel’s two sections was built more recently and has a contemporary style inside and out, but the early 20th-century structure has kept most of its original architectural and decor elements. Painted-tile mosaics, wrought-iron gates and railings, and arched windows and doorways lend the property a charming traditional feel, while the golden crown moldings, wooden shutters, and stained-glass details are elegant touches that hint at the building's grand past. The furniture in common spaces ranges between classic and plain and generic, but the overall feel is lovely and historic. Exteriors are particularly pleasant at Hotel San Gil -- the spacious courtyard with tables and trees is a popular spot for a quiet drink or a relaxed meal, and the rooftop area, complete with a pool and ample seating, is a great perk in the hot summer months.

Location

On the northern edge of the historic district, near restaurants and bars

Hotel San Gil is located on a narrow street on the northern edge of Seville’s historic district. There are many restaurants, bars, and small shops within a couple of blocks, and Basilica of our Lady of Macarena is just a two-minute walk away. This location is good for those looking to stay in a quieter area within the walled city, but most major attractions are a bit of a hike away. El Divino Salvador Church, Casa Pilatos, Palacio de Dueñas, Alameda de Hercules, and Metropol Parasol can each be reached in about 20 minutes on foot. But other top historic sites, such the Cathedral and Giralda Tower, the Real Alcazar, and Maestranza bullring, are over 25 minutes away. Attractions farther afield -- such as Plaza de Espana, the Archaeological Museum, and Triana neighborhood -- can be reached by bus in about 30 minutes. There is a bus stop just a two-minute walk from the hotel. Santa Justa train station is a 20-minute drive away, as is the airport.

Rooms

Comfortable rooms with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and marble bathrooms

The hotel has 85 rooms spread over two buildings set around a lovely courtyard. All are clean and comfortable, but decor varies between classic and fresh depending on room location. Units in the modern section have contemporary decor that combines laminate floors with dark-wooden furniture and a gray palette, while rooms in the small palace have a slightly more dated style with marble-like floors, heavy wooden furniture with classic lines, and small armchairs in neutral tones. All rooms, however, feature the same solid amenities, including air-conditioning, minibars, and flat-screen TVs with a few international channels. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, but in-room safes are only available for an extra charge. Bathrooms in the original building are clad in marble tiles and feature shower/tub combos; bathrooms in the modern section have more stylish chocolate-brown tiles and countertops, and newer taps and hairdryers.

Features

Small rooftop pool, restaurant and bar with courtyard seating, and underground parking

The hotel’s small rooftop pool is a definite highlight. Views are average and it is not big enough for laps, but the water is cool in the summer, and there is a large deck with padded loungers and a handful of umbrellas. It is a big hit with guests in the hot spring and summer days, but the vibe is generally quiet and relaxing. Free pool towels are available at front desk. La Calesera Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and serves solid regional cuisine and tapas made with seasonal ingredients. Breakfast (not included in the standard rate) gets great reviews for variety and quality, and can be enjoyed in a large, charming courtyard shared with the adjacent bar. The hotel offers special rates at an underground parking lot located around the corner.
