Grand Hotel Minareto

Guests looking for a time-out are generally in luck when they arrive at the Grand Hotel Minareto. First impressions are of wide palm-lined paths, fragrant olive and lemon trees, sea breezes, solid stone balustrades, and the Arabian minaret that gives the hotel its name. There are plenty of quiet corners here, with shaded spots by the pool or in the landscaped gardens, or out in the sun on the cliffside terraces or private beach. Inside, expect elegant -- but dated -- Arabian-inspired decor with lots of marble, walnut paneling, Swarovski crystal chandeliers, gilded mirrors, Persian rugs, and bonsai trees. This is a romantic escape for more mature couples who want uninterrupted relaxation as well as historic sightseeing nearby. However, it’s worth noting that regular private events like weddings and conferences can completely alter the relaxed atmosphere.

The Grand Hotel Minareto has a unique setting in Syracuse. It’s the only hotel inside the Plemmirio Marine Nature Reserve, across the across the bay from UNESCO World Heritage-listed Syracuse and its main tourist hub, Ortigia Island. There are views of both from the hotel, as well as to Mount Etna beyond. The rocky outcropping on which the hotel sits means direct access to clear waters and a private sandy beach. However, it's far from anything of note and guests will need a car to explore (or they can take the hotel's shuttle). The ancient island of Ortigia -- home to beautiful Baroque buildings, cool restaurants that sprawl out onto charming piazzas, and attractions like the Duomo di Siracusa -- can reached by the hotel’s free shuttle bus in around 15 minutes or by boat (for a fee). It’s also a 15-minute drive to the Archaeological Park Neapolis, home to the Greek theater and Roman amphitheater. The closest airport is Catania, around an hour’s drive.

There's a bit of disparity between this hotel's standard stock of rooms and suites and its villas. Rooms and suites are housed in low-rise buildings spread throughout the gardens, and have an Old World look that's dated. Marble and walnut feature heavily. Persian rugs adorn the floors, sheets are satin, and curtains and bed spreads feature opulent William Morris-esque patterns. The villas -- by contrast -- are tricked out in sharp contemporary mod decor and have bold artwork plus extras like foosball tables or pools. Standard amenities include air-conditioning, 32-inch TV, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms and suites have marble bathrooms with stall showers plus bathrobes and hairdryers. The sleek bathrooms in the villas have swish walk-in showers, contemporary fixtures, and tons of space. Each unit has a terrace or outdoor space plus varying garden or sea views . Panoramic Sea View Junior Suites sit right at the edge of the promontory with uninterrupted vistas to Ortigia Island.

The hotel’s features are dotted around the sprawling waterfront grounds, with a golf buggy available to transport guests from their rooms. Guests have exclusive access to Latomie Bay, a golden sandy beach inside the protected marine reserve. Beach and pool towels are free. Sun terraces are tiered down the cliffside and a wooden deck overlooking the sea with two whirlpools is a romantic spot at sunset with a glass of Champagne. However, the hub of the hotel is the large (unheated) freshwater pool. 

A breakfast buffet includes fruit, pastries, cold meats, and eggs cooked to order. It's free with bookings. Nesos Restaurant opens for lunch and dinner and serves a Sicilian menu -- some previous guests comment on the pricey, small portions and mixed quality. There’s also a pool bar for lighter bites and a refined lobby bar for after-dinner drinks. The Titanic Terrace is a swankier spot reserved for private events. 

The eponymous Minareto tower houses the 2B Spa, with a sauna, hammam, whirlpool tub, and couples’ treatment room. Two further treatment rooms can be found outside of the tower with their own distinct design. The small gym has a handful of machines and free weights, and is open 24/7. Bikes can also be rented. There’s plenty of parking on-site and the hotel’s free twice-a-day shuttle runs to Ortigia (though it fills up quickly). Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
