Bottom Line

Contemporary and luxurious, the 63-room NH Collection Taormina provides panoramic views from the rooftop terrace and its facilities, including the small pool, poolside bar, and stylish restaurant terrace. A small, pleasant spa provides free access to the hammam, sauna, and a modern gym. Meeting space fits up to 274 people and business services are available. The hotel is a five-minute walk to shops, cafes, and restaurants on Corso Umberto. Elegantly furnished rooms have modern features -- minibars and flat-screen TVs -- and suites offer terraces with beautiful views and hot tubs. The luxury rooms and views, however, come at high cost, and the pool can get quite crowded.

Scene

Luxurious 20th-century hotel set on the hillside, overlooking Taormina and the sea

Set on a narrow street in Taormina, the sleek glass entrance of this sixth-floor hotel stands out against the older buildings in the area. Luxury is imbued into the lobby that’s stylishly furnished with 20th-century designs, Sicilian-style tiles behind the stone front desk, colorful and contemporary seating, and oversized cacti. Cookies and sweets are often available in the lobby that features a glass ceiling that looks into the infinity pool above. The NH Collection Taormina’s stylishly furnished rooftop terrace overlooks Naxos Bay, providing stunning views. The hillside setting and modern interiors create a romantic vibe that caters to couples who are willing to pay more for a luxurious vacation.

Location

Centrally located above Taormina, near the action on Corso Umberto

The hotel has great views of Taormina city and Naxos Bay from its location on Via Circonvallazione, a street that runs parallel to the busy Corso Umberto, a popular promenade crowded with shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants. Taormina’s historical sights -- the Greek Theater, Baroque Fountain, Church of San Domenico, and Corvaja Palace -- are in walking distance of the hotel. Also within five minutes on foot are concerts at the Taormina Arte and the Italian Opera Taormina. The beach at Isola Bella is about five kilometers from the hotel and reachable via the cable car. A beach shuttle (for a fee) can be arranged through the front desk. The drive to Catania Fontanarossa Airport takes about one hour.

Rooms

Rooms and suites feature elegant interior designs, and some have sea views from terraces or balconies.

The style in rooms is contemporary and elegant with wooden floors, classic artwork, silver desks, green or orange accent walls, and headboards upholstered in green or silver. Sea views from balconies or terraces are available in upgraded rooms and suites. Italian sweets are a yummy touch. All rooms offer turndown service, air-conditioning, bathrobes and slippers, free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, desks, safes, kettles, and minibars, and some have Levazza coffeemakers. Bathrooms feature stylish dark tiles with an iridescent glow, bidets, shower/tub combos, and hairdryers.

Superior and Premium Rooms fit three people with one double bed or two twin beds in each. Family Rooms, which have sofa beds, are suitable for four people. Suites also fit four people and offer sofa beds, dining tables, and hot tubs on terraces. Wooden panels create a sophisticated vibe in the Presidential Suite that features a narrow sitting area, one and a half bathrooms, a whirlpool tub, and a sea-facing rooftop terrace with a hot tub.

Features

Stylish dining and poolside cocktails, an outdoor pool, spa with a fitness center, parking, and meeting rooms

On the top floor of the NH Collection Taormina is the Zagara Restaurant with low-hanging ceilings and purple and white velvet dining chairs next to glass windows that look into the lobby. But the best views are on the dining terrace that overlooks Naxos Bay. The yellow-themed bar -- with cocktails, wine, and snacks -- is stylish and offers dining on the deck of the infinity pool that has glass windows on the bottom. The pool, however, is small and lounge chairs are sometimes full.

It may not be five-star quality, but the spa is charming and features Sicilian-style tiles, a lounge, a small sauna, and hammam -- which are free for guests to access. Parking, for a fee, is available on-site. On the same floor as the pool is a small gym with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer views of the Greek Theater; the gym is equipped with modern cardio and weightlifting equipment. Three contemporary meeting rooms are available for functions of up to 274 people. The terrace can also be rented.
